ANNA'S POV:
New Year’s Day was only a heartbeat away. My room still smelled faintly of the warm steam from my shower as I folded the last of my clothes into my trunk. I was packing for the Burrow, packing for home, in a way, because I’d leave for Hogwarts with the Weasleys.
A part of me had been secretly terrified that Mum might stop me from going after George and Fred’s unexpected visit the other day. But she hadn’t. Not a single word, not a single raised eyebrow. In fact, she was the one who reminded me, rather cheerfully, to pack my things in advance. And though I didn’t admit it aloud, I’d been watching her every move, waiting for the slightest sign of hesitation. But she was calm. Almost normal. And it eased something tight inside my chest.
Lunch was still an hour away, so I decided to give Chocolate a bath. The little fluffball wagged her tail through the entire thing, soaking me more than herself. No sooner had I dried her off than Mum’s voice floated up the stairs calling me for lunch.
I headed down and took my place at the dining table between Mum and Dad.
"Did you pack your trunk?", Mum asked as she placed food onto my plate.
"Yes, Mum. All packed", I said.
"Everything? Books? Clothes?", she listed, one by one.
I nodded through mouthfuls of food while Dad watched us fondly, amused by our little ritual.
"And Chocolate? Did you give her a bath?".
"Yes, Mum. Just now".
She nodded again. Her calmness felt like a blessing. I couldn’t help but smile at her, relieved, grateful.
After lunch I changed into fresh clothes, slipped on my charm bracelet, my new locket, then carried Chocolate, Cotton, and my trunk down the stairs. Dad spotted me struggling under the weight.
"Ready to go?", he asked, rising from the couch beside Mum.
"Yes, Dad", I puffed, lowering the trunk with a thud. They both walked toward me.
"Look at you", Dad murmured, holding my arms gently as his eyes softened. "My little girl is growing up. And I don’t like the fact that I can’t watch you become this diligent, kind young woman every single day".
He pulled me into his arms and pressed a kiss to my head. I hugged him tightly.
"I love you, Dad",
"I love you too, darling", he kissed me again before Mum swept me into one of her tight, comforting embraces.
"Take care of yourself. Write back whenever I write to you. Stay safe. Remember your promise… and behave", she whispered, kissing the side of my head.
"I will. I love you, Mum", My heart warmed under the weight of her worry and affection.
"I love you too", she said, smiling brightly.
"Mum, Dad… Happy New Year",
"Happy New Year, darling", they chorused.
After sending my trunk off to the Burrow through the Floo, I kissed them both on the cheek. Then I stepped into the fireplace, grabbed a handful of Floo powder, and called out, "The Burrow!" Green flames whirled around me, swallowing the world whole.
When the flames died down and the room came into focus, I found myself exactly where I longed to be, the Weasleys’ home.
Before I could take a breath, George scooped me into a fierce hug.
"Finally you’re here", he said, eyes dancing with joy. I grinned back at him.
Fred’s dramatic groan followed. "Why is it that you never see me when you're in George’s arms?",
