NARRATOR'S POV
It didn't make sense.
Anna's jaw tightened as Hermione finished speaking, the words hanging heavy between them like a bad spell gone wrong. Buckbeak....sentenced to death...for what the Ministry had the audacity to call a 'fatal attack'.
"But that's not fair", Anna burst out, anger flaring hot and sharp. "It was barely a scratch. Draco Malfoy's just an overdramatic daddy's boy who tripped over his own ego".
Hermione's shoulders sagged. "Hagrid's absolutely devastated", she said quietly, staring down at her hands. "He hasn't stopped blaming himself".
"They can't do this", Diana snapped, fists clenched. "They just....can't".
Hermione swallowed before delivering the final blow. "The Ministry's already passed the verdict".
That was it. Final. Cold. Unforgiving.
The days that followed blurred together, dragged forward by the relentless march of time and the looming pressure of O.W.L.s. Anna carried the weight of it all, Buckbeak, Hagrid, the unfairness of the world, straight into the examination hall. But like always, she excelled. Every theory paper, every practical spell came to her cleanly, brilliantly, as though sheer defiance had sharpened her focus.
For a brief while after, there was relief. Then the anxiety crept back in, quieter but more insistent, coiling around her thoughts as she replayed every answer, every wand movement.
George noticed.
They didn't spend much time alone, Anna buried herself in the library or her dormitory, parchment and textbooks stacked high around her like a fortress. Even when she studied with George, Fred and Diana were inevitably there too, making jokes, whispering conspiracies, turning revision into chaos.
And then there was Professor Lupin.
Anna noticed his absences long before anyone said a word. A cancelled lesson with a neatly pinned note. An empty seat at the staff table. The faint, almost imperceptible exhaustion lining his face when he was there. He smiled, always kind, always gentle, but something behind his eyes seemed strained, as though he were holding himself together by habit alone.
He never explained. Never complained. He simply carried on.
It unsettled her more than she cared to admit.
The day Buckbeak was meant to die arrived wrapped in grey silence.
Anna sat on her bed in the girls' dormitory, Chocolate curled warm and solid in her lap. She stroked the cat's fur absently, eyes unfocused, heart heavy.
Hagrid must be broken, she thought. Absolutely broken. A tear slipped free before she could stop it.
Chocolate lifted her head and meowed softly.
"Oh, Chocolate", Anna whispered, scooping her up and holding her close. "I love you so much. I couldn't bear to lose you".
The next afternoon, the Gryffindor common room buzzed with restless energy. George, Fred and Lee were in the middle of some animated discussion, something involving enchanted cutlery and plausible deniability while Anna and Diana listened, half-amused.
Then a voice cut through the noise.
"Did you hear about Professor Lupin?",
Anna froze.
"Heard what?", another student asked.
George and Fred were too busy talking over each other to notice the way Anna's attention snapped sharply toward the pair.
"He's a werewolf".
The world tilted.
Anna's breath caught as though she'd been struck. Her gaze dropped to the floor, heart pounding, mind scrambling. Shock gave way to something colder, fear, not for herself, but for him.
