DISCLAIMER

I'm confident that there are things I missed, and that this probably doesn't do justice to what happened to the Malawians, but I hope it did an adequate job of showing the events that led up to the independence of the republic in a simplified manner.

Malawi, also officially known as the Republic of Malawi, is a country located in East Africa. (Map edited by me-)

Story:

When English settlers arrived in Malawi, they were focused more on making money through cash crops, then they did about how the African people were doing. (Big surprise am I right??)

This focus on the European settlers forced many African people to work in other countries.

Slave trade, and awful working conditions were two of the reasons that Malawi began wanting independence.

One more of these reasons is the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. This was an "amalgamated territory" that was created to make it easier for the English to draw upon black labor.

All of these factors (and there are probably more I'm sure) caused a nationalist movement to rise.

This movement grew large in the early 1950's, and was heavily influenced by the introduction of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

In 1958, and with the leader Hastings Kamusu Banda, the Nationalist movement finally began to show its ability to bring change.

In 1963 the Federation was dissolved and on its Independence Day, July 6 1964, Malawi became independent.

Without further ado.....

Just some headcannons for Malawi

Something important to mention:
Countries only represent their people. I'm not a big fan of politics, and bringing the complicated relationships of international politics into my world would just be a massive headache.
BUT that doesn't mean that I don't use some political information for my headcannons. Some of the main stuff for that would be their stance on the LGBTQ+ community (laws, and regulations) and their friends (allies).

Pronouns: She/her

Hope this was sort of informational lol. If I missed anything feel free to tell me in the comments!!

Edit: removing unnecessary headcannon info that wasn't really needed
