The Bahamas is located in the Lucayan Archipelago of the West Indies in the Atlantic (photo edited by me):
From what I can tell the Bahamas had a pretty good hold over their political affairs, even before the Bahamas became independent.
In may 1963 London held a conference discussing a new constitution for the Bahamas.
The Bahamas was decided to get a full internal self government, and the new constitution became effective on January 7th, 1964. Lots of constitutional advances were brought into effect in the year 1969, and they almost had a complete internal self government.
In 1953 Bahamians who were of African descent formed the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP for short) in order to fight against the people who were in power.
And in 1958 those people created the United Bahamian party (UBP) that was controlled by British descendants in order to counter the PLP.
After the PLP gained the slight majority in 1967 they formed a government with Lynden Pindling as their leader.
The PLP started working for more government control over the economy, and they had started working towards total independence.
Finally on July 10th, 1973, the Bahamas, using the name The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, became independent.
Bahamas' Pronouns: He/him
