The Maldive island's Independence Day is celebrated on the day that Britian recognized their Declaration of Independence.

The Maldives were made a British protectorate* in The two main families of the capital were having a fued, and the polotics combined with an unstable economy led Sultan Mueenuddin II to sign the protectorate agreement in 1887.

During March of 1959 three of the southern atolls seceded from the Maldives and this rebellion happened during a dispute over a military base. These three atolls were Addu, Fuvahmulah, and Huvadhoo.

Mass arrests were made on the island of Thinadhoo (part of the Huvadhoo atoll.) Following this the British and Malé governments started negotiations about the Gan military base.

The February of 1960 the Suavadive Republic (the name of the republic that the three atolls created) agreed "to accept the sultan of Maldives as their head of state in Addu."

Nasir (the prime minister of the Maldives at the time), lead another attack on Thinadhoo. This time he depopulated the island. There was controversy considering this massacre. Some called it cruel and excessive; others called it necessary to reunite the Maldives.

The British manage to get Afeef (I think that this person was a main leader in the revolt) to agree to end the revolt.

July 26th 1965 was the day that Nasiar signed the independence agreement with the British.
