How they gained independence:

During World War Two Iraq was taken from Ottoman Turkey by Britain, and under British protection a Hashemite monarch was designated.

In October of 1932 independance was granted to the Kindomg of Iraq, but close ties were still held with Britain, and anti-British revolts started.

In 1941 Britain intervened, militarily after a pro-axis revolt took place.

The monarch was overthrown in 1958, and Iraq was lead by military and civilian governments over a span of two decades.
