The general location of the Ivory Coast can be traced back to the kingdom of Gyaaman (fun-fact: I first read that as Gayman-) This kingdom had a "a centralized political and administrative system" by the 18th century, but then everyone lost their shit trying to colonize Africa.

The Ivory Coast was colonized by the French, but during the begining the Ivorians didn't have any (maybe they had some, but that's not mentioned) political rights until the end of World War Two.

The country became self-governed in 1958, and August 7th, 1960 was when they finally gained independence from France.
