When Japan created a Japanese protectorate* for Korea, a Korean Nationalists movement began.

protectorate*: a state that is controlled and protected by another.
(Source this is the link: https://languages.oup.com/google-dictionary-en but it doesn't lead to the definition so just look up Protectorate on google lol)

A rebellion against the Japanese government was commanded by Yi In-yong, had around 10,000 members, and was called the "Righteous Army."

This rebellion was stopped by the 20,000 troops that Japan sent to halt the Righteous Army, and while the conflict was still happening in August 22, 1910, Japan annexed* Korea. The rebellion was quashed in 1912.

annexed*: to incorporate (a country or other territory) within the domain of a state
The U.S. annexed Texas in 1845.

On March 1st of 1919, Korea was formally declared independent by Korean Nationalists. Japan did not want this to happen, so 6,000 troops were sent over to the peninsula, in order to suppress the movement.

Pro-Independence demonstrations were held back, but Korean nationalists still assembled the Korean People's Congress along with electing Son Pyongyang-hi as president of the government-in-exile* on March 17, 1919.

government-in-exile*: a government temporarily established on foreign soil following the occupation of its own territory by another authority

Another two governments-in-exile were created in Shanghai, China and Seoul, Korea, two of these three governments-in-exile were lead by Syngman Rhee, and subsequently proclaimed the Republic of Korea independence on August 31st of 1919 in Washington DC.

A failed assasination of Baron Saito who was the Japanese governor-general* of Korea took place on September 2, 1919, and Korean rebels had a strife with Japanese troops in Manchuria and norther Korea in 1920. This conflict killed around 10,000 people.

A communist party was established in Seoul by Korean Communists on April 12, 1925, and demonstrations were suppressed.

In 1943 China and the USA supported a "free and independant" Korea.

Soviet troops got involved in northern Korea on August 13th of 1945, while US troops became involved in Southern Korea on September 8, 1945.

Korea was divided at the 38th parallel*, becoming two occupation zones, by the Soveit Union, and the US after the Japanese surrendered to the allies on August 15 1945. (After the Soviet troops arrived, but before the US troops)

38th parallel*: A latitude line that runs through several places, but Korea being one of them.

To govern and negotiate the independance of Korea a "four power trusteeship" including the US, Soviet Union, China, and the UK was agreed to on December 27, 1945.

The two sides or as uca.edu puts it "Right-wing Koreans led by Syngman Rhee and left-wing (communist) Koreans led by Kim Il-Sung competed for control of the Korean peninsula beginning in 1946." (the Korean War was political okay, don't start something in the comments)

Between October 1 and November 30, 1946, US troops and Korean police repressed uprisings from laborers all throughout southern Korea. This ended up in the deaths of around 1,200 people.

After a heavily monitored election where around 500 people were killed because of violence relating to the elections, The South Korean National Assembly adopted a constitution on July 17, 1948. Syngman Rhee was elected by the National Assembly to be president on July 20th

The People's Democratic Republic of Korea (PDRK) was created in North Korea on September 9, 1948, and was led by Kim Il (il) Sung.

On December 25th of 1948 Soviet troops left North Korea, and on June 19th 1949 US troops left South Korea.

Another thing that was mentioned was that the political violence between June 1921 and September 1948 killed around 100,000 Koreans.
