Liberia has a..... strange beginning to say the least.
"In 1816, a group of white Americans founded the American Colonization Society (ACS) to deal with the "problem" of the growing number of free blacks in the United States by resettling them in Africa."
This resulted in Liberia, but there was a large issue with getting land for the new colony. No one wanted to sell land. Around 1821 a section of land was finally purchased, and Liberia started.
Liberia "was hard-pressed to defend its economic interests." The only help that Liberia received from the US was diplomatic support, and this caused Liberia to declare independence. Independence would make it so that they could create their own laws and stop the French and British traders from entering their territory.
Liberia gained independence on July 26th, 1847.
