Ecuador's Independence Day is a commemoration of Quoto's (Ecuador's capital) claim for independence. It was "the first call for independence from Spain was made in Latin America..."

Even though Quito made a claim for independence, they didn't get it. The first city in Ecuador to gain independence was Guayaquil; they got it in October 9th of 1820.

Ecuador got full independence two years later on May 24th, 1822, and then joined the Republic of Gran Colombia. That only lasted for about eight years because Ecuador separated in 1830.
