Artemis

I laid in bed wide-awake and staring at the ceiling in the dark. I had been in this position for nearly an hour, unable to fall asleep despite my desperate need to do so. I was exhausted and yet sleep was the farthest thing from my mind.

Dimitri on the other hand was snoring lightly and totally content as he laid next to me. There was a relaxed expression on his face and he didn't even looked stressed out like most nights when pack business, family life and the daily worries plagued him.

I had a sneaking suspicion that getting to beat up Marcus had something to do with my mate's relaxed form. After months of contained hatred for the man he finally got what he deserved and watching Dimitri so at peace that was the only logical explanation.

"Why aren't you asleep yet?" Caroline asked tiredly.
"I don't know, I'm restless tonight," I told her.
"It's kinda hot, maybe the heat is what's preventing you from falling asleep. Get some fresh air it'll make everything better," she advised.

I slipped one of Dimitri's t-shirts over my half naked body and a pair of booty shorts and climbed out of bed. It was a little after midnight and the breeze was blowing the trees outside when I stepped onto the balcony.

The cold wind kissed my face and legs and I exhaled in relief. The moon was out and several clouds scattered across the sky, dark and so mysterious. I felt at peace with the night. The darkness, the cold and the tranquility that came with it.

For some reason I couldn't bring myself to go back inside, even after my body had cooled down significantly and I was no longer feeling restless. I rubbed my eyes and looked down at the forest's entrance. Maybe a run would be nice.

A quick run through the forest to completely cleanse my mind of all the stress accumulated over yesterday's untimely events.
"While I would love nothing more than to go for a run right now, I don't think Roman and Dimitri would appreciate their mate running off in the darkness while they're asleep," Caroline interjected.

"When did you become such a buzzkill? Usually you're the reckless and I'm the cautious. You do something crazy and I try to talk you out of it. Our roles seem to be reversed," I said in a teasing voice.
"Say what you want, when Dimitri finds out he'll be mad," she said.

I smiled and shook my head amusedly. Maybe tomorrow we could go for a run. Me, Dimitri and our wolves. When we had a free minute we could spend sone quality time together. I sighed wistfully and took one more glance at the forest.

That's when I saw her.

A woman wearing a long white dress with sleeves reaching her fingers, and a black cloak over her head. I felt my pores raise and my heart began to palpitate. She was slim and tall and I couldn't see her face. She looked up suddenly and saw me on the banister.

"Ugh she's creepy," Caroline said in a squeaky voice.
"Who is she? I've never seen her before, she wasn't there ten minutes ago either, it's like she appeared out of thin air," I whispered.
"I don't sense her wolf, maybe she's a human," Caroline observed.

I looked down at her and she tilted her head to the side.
"Uh w..who are you? Are you lost?" I asked shakily.
She shook her head in denial and pulled her cloak back and I nearly screamed out loud when I saw her face.
