He stands frozen by the door as it slowly closes behind him, his eyes wide, before he hides his face under the shade of his hat. A million and one questions go through my mind, and at the same time I couldn't believe the chances... Out of all the people who came into my life... the man I feel so drawn to... was the very boy my father wrote about in his letters so many years ago. My tears trickle down as I stare in shock and without my full consciousness, my mouth parts open.
"... Did you know? Back when we first met?"
It was as if I was possessed as the questions linger in my mind and I await his response before asking another question. Law shakes his head and timidly gazes back at me as if he had harmed me in some way. His eyes filled with sorrow and remorse as they meet mine and he swallows hard.
"No... I had no idea that Corazon had a child. He never told me." Law says softly, lost in thought as he recalls his past with him. "I didn't know until I retrieved your things from Hawkins-ya... I didn't read everything, but I recognized the handwriting and saw the signature."
It was quiet for a few moments before I licked my dry lips. "... I-Is he..."
"... He... he died while retrieving the Ope Ope Fruit. One of Doflamingo's henchmen investigated Corazon and found out he was undercover." Law answers as he sits his nodachi down and sits at the foot of the bed, facing away from me. "... I... Maybe he would've got away in time if he didn't try to save me."
His voice was bleak when he said that, and my hands clench in fists as he continues to be turned away from me. "Law. Look at me."
He doesn't dare to move... whether it was in mourning or shame that kept him still as stone, and I sit up and move to his side. With my wounded arm, I stretch out to touch his dampened cheek gently, and I turn his face to me as tears continue to flow down mine.
"... I may not know much about my dad. But I know as much as you, that he was willing to do anything to save you... So don't you dare start with 'it's all my fault' crap!" I whisper firmly as my brows knit together.
Tears flowing freely down his face, he finally turns to me and his arms pulling me in close. Without any hesitation, I hug him back, the both of us overwhelmed with bottled up emotions that finally broke free. I couldn't help but smile as I look up, a part of me wondering how he would feel if he saw us now, as I recalled what he said in the note.
"At least... in the end maybe he can rest a little bit easier now. He wrote that he wished that we got to meet." I chuckle and he looks at me in surprise before smiling tenderly.
"... Y/n-ya... I need to confess something that I should've told you a long time ago." He says seriously as he pulls back and his fingers fiddle with mine as he spoke. "When you joined my crew... you became such an important member to me and the others so easily, that I was slow to understand how I feel about you. Even though I didn't know you were his daughter, you remind me a lot of Corazon. Your smile, clumsiness... the way you brought color into the dull parts of my life - they all made me feel secure and happy."
My heart was racing as I felt blood rushing to my face. Everything he touches burns as he brings a warm hand to my face as his fingers brushes loose strands of hair from my face.
"And when I realized my feelings, I began to try and push you away... I didn't want you to have the same fate as him. But when you left and I found out what happened, I could only think of getting you back safely, holding you close, and never losing sight of you again." He looks at me deeply as a soft pink hue rises in his cheeks. "Y/n... I love you."
My heart feels as if it exploded as a big smile forms on my face and I pull him into my embrace. "Stupid doctor, I'm a pirate... I'm always going to be in some danger. But Law... I'm happy with this life, and I wanna continue being by your side till the end... Law, I love you too."
