The next day Kai takes care of me as I recover from the emotional pain of mine and Bonnies birthday. I had him drop off a happy birthday card to Jeremy but when I got a call from Stefan that Liz was going to pass soon. I got out of bed and to the hospital as fast as I could, Caroline let me say goodbye, and when I got home Kai was there waiting with open arms ready to hold me as I cried myself to sleep for the second night in a row. 

The next day I saw Kai off to Portland and we all slept at the Salvatore's, me and Caroline shared a couch, and the next day we would prepare for Liz's funeral.

"You've all asked what you can do to help. There are five days' worth of projects here. We are going to do them in one. We can break the rules and cut through red tape. Yeah, I expect my mom to be properly celebrated and buried by the end of the day." Caroline.

"Sure, Care. Whatever you need." Matt says.

"Elena and Zoe, you're coming with me." Caroline says and I nod.

"Where are we going?" Elena asks her.

"Casket shopping." Caroline tells us." Let's move."

"You drive." Elena tells Caroline." I sent my car to Jeremy." 

"Jeremy. I forgot to put him on my list of people to call." Caroline says.

"Elena, will worry about Jeremy, Care, Right Elena?" I ask.

" Yeah, I called him already."

Speaking of calls, my phone rings." Kai? How's Portland?" I ask and I hear someone throwing up.

"Ya, um, didn't make it through the airport, knew you were super busy so I just went to your place but uh, I really need you, can you meet me at Jo's?" Kai asks as I settle into the back seat. Caroline and Elena look at me.

"I'm helping Caroline get things ready for her mom's funeral. Is it important?" I ask him and he coughs and throws up again.

"Kinda, I'm dying." He tells me. Caroline and Elena frown.

"Go, me and Elena's got this, just don't be late to the funeral." Caroline says. I kiss her cheek and speed off to Jo's.

I knock on the door and Ric opens it. I go to walk in but bump into the invisible barrier and I huff.

"Kai! Tell your sister to invite me in!" I yell into the house. Jo comes out brow raised, and I shrug. She sighs.

"You can come in." 

I walk in and follow the smell of blood, the veins under my eyes become visible.

I see a pale Kai and I grab his hand fighting my instinct to drain him.

"You okay?" I ask him and he shakes his head.

"I was giving him a check-up before you barged in." She says and I cross my arms and send a glare her way as I feel my veins under my eyes pulse.

"I knocked." She rolls her eyes at me.

"Any joint pain?" She asks Kai.

"Mm-hmm." He says taking my hand in his once more and I try to ignore the smell of blood.

 "Headaches?"

"Yep"

"Are you pregnant?" Jo asks him and I smirk.

"Stop making jokes." Kai says and I lay my head on his shoulder and gulp as I eye his neck for a moment then look away.

"Coming from the king of sarcasm." I speak up. He hums laying his head on mine.

"I feel like im being scrunched from inside out." Kai says and Jo checks his ears making me lift my head off his shoulder to give her space." This is kinda private. Does your baby-boo need to be here?" Kai asks.

"Does yours?" Alaric asks back, I roll my eyes.

"Okay, your vitals are fine. Your temperature is normal. I'll wait on pathology, but there's nothing medically wrong with you." Jo tells him and I scoff.

"Well obviously, Jo he smells like death, he's dying." I tell her and she sighs.

"I'm magically diseased." Kai tells her.

" You haven't puked in at least a--" He freezes and I jump away as he pukes blood. I hiss and walk myself into a corner.

"Zoe?" Alaric asks warningly.

"I'll wait outside." I say shakily and speed out of Jo's apartment. Jo gives Kai her magic and he gets better. He comes out with a big smile.

"Feeling better?" I ask him and he nods." Sorry, I freaked." I toll him and he shrugs.

"You're a ripper, it was leave or drain me." he says and I nod.

"I have to get ready for the funeral." I tell him and make a move to walk away but he pulls me back and smashes his lips on mine. I freeze in surprise staring at his closed eyes as his warm lips are pressed to mine, eventually, I close my eyes and kiss back pulling him closer.

We slowly pull away and I freeze. I just kissed Kai." I've been wanting to do that for a while." Kai whispers.

"I-I" I stutter then speed away. I go to mine and get ready for the funeral then go to where the funeral is being held. Through the service, my hand doesn't leave Caroline's. After the funeral, I followed Caroline to her house.

"I know what you're gonna do. You're gonna turn it off." I tell her and she sighs as tears come to her eyes. 

"You should too." She says and I frown. "Your sister may never come back, and if she does you go back to being in her shadow, being uncared for, my mom who was always like a mother to you is dead, and Ric told me you kissed Kai. " She says and I freeze." Nothing has been going your way, Zoe, just let go. We can turn it off for a year then turn it back on, I promise." Carline says, and I sigh.

"I thought about turning it off." I tell her honestly.

"Then do it. It has always been me and you, come on Zoe." I close my eyes and feel for the switch and just like that all my emotions drain away, the sadness, the hurt, the confusion of my feelings for Kai. All gone.

Caroline smirks," Welcome to the club."

"You already turned it off." I say and she nods. 

I smirk. "I'm hungry." I speed off.
