Raising the mug to my lips I take a sip of hot coffee, revelling in its bitter aroma. It's early, and the sun has just started to rise over the new nation of Manburg.
Why Manburg of all things? I wonder with a hum, my expression thoughtful as I gaze out the window to watch the sun. Why not Womanburg? Maybe then we'd have more female residents and Schlatt wouldn't be so grouchy all the time.
The door to the kitchen creaks open and I glance back, lowering the mug from my mouth. A smile blossoms across my lips as I spy the pointed snout of Fundy peering in, shortly followed by the rest of him.
"You're up earl-"
The smile falls as I immediately see Fundy's dark eyes turn glossy and his ears lay flat. He whimpers out my name like a child who's just had a nightmare.
"Baby, what's wrong? You okay?" Leaving my coffee behind I cross the room and place my hands to his cheeks, gazing into his face with a worried expression. I've never seen him so upset before.
"No..." he mumbles and drops his head into my shoulder. I'm quickly pulled into a bone-crushing hug.
"Hey, hey, what's wrong? What happened?" I give him a comforting pat on the head, looping my arms around his neck.
"You'll laugh if I tell you." He mutters into my shoulder.
"I won't laugh so tell me what's wrong. I can't fix the problem if I don't know what it is." I say in hushed tones, thoroughly confused but also concerned. What could have happened to the sweet fox to leave him in such a state. He was fine just yesterday when we went out together to gather wildflowers to decorate the White House with.
He sniffs.
"Promise you won't laugh?"
"Promise."
Reluctantly, Fundy pulls away. He doesn't look at me, but begins to unbutton the front of his blazer, then the white of his dress shirt. I say nothing, miffed by his actions. Why is he suddenly stripping?
Not that I'm complaining. This is the most fur he's ever shown me and I'm not about to tell him to stop now for modesty's sake.
And then I see the cause of his fuss, and it takes every nerve in my body to keep my lips clamped shut to prevent the giggles that threaten to break free.
Someone has shaved a smiley face into Fundy's chest fur, the pink of his naked flesh poking through the orange and white of his fur.
"Mhm. Interesting." I cough, squinting at the smiley face in the hopes that if I can't see it, it can't make me laugh.
"You're laughing!" Fundy yells, distraught, and snaps his shirt closed.
"No. No. I'm not laughing." I say hurriedly, only for a small snort to slip through.
"You are! You promised!" The fox whines, the betrayal clear in his voice and eyes. "I come to you for comfort and this is how you treat me?!"
"Oh hush, it is a little funny." I wrap my arms around his neck again and pull him against me, preventing him from running away. "Someone shaved my boyfriend. Am I not allowed to at least giggle?"
"No," he huffs.
"You're so sensitive." I smile and turn to press a kiss into his cheek. "And I love you all the more for it. Now why don't you tell me how this happened?"
"I don't know how it happened! I just woke up like this and it's creeping me out." He whines, finally releasing his shirt to wrap his arms around my waist.
