Packing didn't take all that long and then I begun to wander aimlessly again. So naturally the laundry came next and from there I scrubbed the bathroom before vacuuming and moping the entire unit.
It was late when I finally finished. Setting aside the tools that made my apartment sparkling clean I got a bite to eat before setting my alarm and turning in for the night.
It was those sparkly clean surfaces that came back to bite me in the morning. The light from the bright morning sun peeped through the curtains to lit across the dust and grime free surfaces of my room only to bounce off and tumble upon me. With a groan I tossed and turned stuffing pillows first on then off my face. Needing to breathe made that necessary. Finally I simply got up and dressed way before it was time.
I decided to be early for my doctors appointment and when I took the train and then the bus to the exclusive clinics for the rich, I found I was not that early afterall. That despite the appointment that Mark booked me I still had a long wait before me if the throng of patients before me was any indication.
I registered at the reception and went to take a seat in the expensively decorated but otherwise sterile environment.
There was a wide screen tv in the reception and the loony toons was playing. So I settled in to watch while waiting. Despite my early start to the day my turn came just after my stomach was bursting in hunger for lunch.
The doctor was a lady. And she looked as peaked as I did by the instructions before her.
"A virginity test? What the fucking archival notion is that?" She asked glaring at me as if it was my fault. I shrugged my shoulders.
" Well we'll do a papsmear too then. Your fiancé is a convoluted sicko," she grumped angrily. I merely nodded my head in agreement.
The doctor was aged but her experience was doubly appreciated for she was done in records time. Prouncing me indeed a virgin she said she would fax the results to the address on the instructions. The instructions had been part of the legal documents. I flushed red thinking about what the bloody lawyers must have been thinking when drafting it.
But like everything else that was weird and bizarre in my life right now I merely shrugged it off and ignored it.
I got myself some sushi to munch into on my way to the office. Mark had a stack of documents for me to wade through and then sign before I take that trip with him to only God knows where.
My bags for that sat packed and waiting in my apartment so I would have to swing by at some point to collect them too.
I sighed at the busy day ahead and embarked on the bus and train ride back to the city where my place of work reside.
I found my feet patter to a stop before Ron's Cafe. A quick glance up at the sign proved my unvoiced fears right. The shop had been sold again. This time the proud owners were Stacey and Michelle. As the sign in front clearly proclaimed them to own the cafe.
I turned away with a deeply felt sigh. One over the loss of the greatest coffees of my life -Macy's and then what I thought could have been the love of my life- Ron.
But when I realised that I viewed those losses in exactly that order, I understood - Ron was a mere infatuation. He hadn't been the love of my life. If he had surely I would have esteemed his loss above that of Macy's Coffee.
Maybe Brett had it right all along. In all the years I have known him he had always unfailingly proclaimed that it was lust that ruled the world and made it spin around -not love.
Love was an acceptable brand marketing of what was essentially lust.
