It was no wonder I found myself so easily attracted to the opposite sex. I was obviously overdue for sexual interaction with one of its prime members.

But not with Mark, my boss. That was one man that would remain the exception.  It was not that I didn't find him intensely appealing at least on a physical level but he's dark good looks aside he was a famous nitpicker. I hated working for him. He would find flaws when non-existented. Fabricate failures when none existed. If I didn't so desperately need the job I would have walked long ago.

I could walk now. Especially as the sale of my house was in the works but it would be a time yet before that eventuates. Settlement was usually at least three months on.

Thankfully, my lawyers would handle that bit of transactions.

I marched into the foyer and then the perpetually crowded lift. A moment later and Cathy was waving me into Mark's office.

"You're late," barked Mark from behind his desk. His head was bent in concentration over a stack of papers. I wondered if he even knew it was me or if that was just his standard greeting to everyone.

"There was a lot of patients, " I said with a dismissive shrug.

" That was why I arranged an appointment.  So that you wouldn't need to wait,"  said Mark abruptly.  His gaze snapped to mine accusingly but I was undisturbed.

" I haven't actually signed the contract yet," I reminded him and his expression cleared instantly.  It was obvious he had overlooked that necessity before reverting back to his usual less charming self. And he would revert back. The charm was turned on for only one reason.  To get what he wanted.  There was no one I knew more calculating then Mark. Other than Brett of course.  But I really would consider the two a tie in that regard. And just about every other regard as well. Actually, Mark might even rank ahead in one aspect and that was quite simply because he has thus far kept his hands off me.

" Well perhaps its time you did. The stack is on that table.  Take your time reading but I want it signed by three. We are heading out on our trip then," said Mark almost absentmindedly.  He waved me off towards the table but when I went to take the documents away with me back to my own office I found my intentions waylaid.

" Read it here and sign it here." Was all Mark said before he returned back to the documents on his own table.

I turned then to award him an intense glare. He was horrid. Now that he was having his way I could safely hate him anew.

I took a seat on the elegant sofa and picked up the stack of legalese from the little coffee table before it.  I set out to read through it with intense concentration. It occurred to me that Mark needed me for this and I was eager to ensure that my sacrifice would be well rewarded. Somewhere in this document my remuneration package was entailed and with it the escape clause. I would need to pay particular attention to those details but even so I give the entire contract a detailed scrutiny before putting my pen to paper, inking my name across my fate.

At least over the fate of my near future. For this contract surely wasn't intended as a forever.
