My hand struck with a resounding smack that echoed across the sterile room that was Mark Gatwick's office.

I stared up at him in a strange mixture of elation, anger and yes, lust.

His bright green gaze sparkled with his own muted rage before his hand closed about my own in an unrelenting death grip.

" You dare...," he gritted out through barely restrained anger before drawing himself short on a calming breath. But the calming efforts failed for only a breath later and he spat out,"You're fired!"

I wrenched my wrist free then and bit out angrily, " Fine!"

I turned to stride out angrily reaching to wrench off my ring first and pause to toss it back in his face but his hand closed over mine and I was wrenched up against him again as he stared incredulously down at me as if I was mad.

"You're actually going to throw away your ownly chance ever to have billions to your name? "

I shook like a reed in his arms insensibly before saying through gritted teeth of my own. "I cannot miss what I have never had. You and your millions mean nothing at all to me!"

" You'll never get another proposal for marriage let alone one like my own," said Mark, eyes flashing green emeralds as he stared down into mine.  I couldn't help take a moment to marvel that my horrible ex-boss is indeed gorgeous. What the hell! I didn't need an awareness like that now!

" I have received a proposal, " I spat out almost rudely disgusted with my own fickle attractions.  " One I had refused because he was as much a jerk as you. But now I am thinking he might have been the better option after all."

I struggled against him then trying to break loose.

"If you're talking about you coffee barista friend, Ron,  then know this that he is off the running.  I paid him off. Settled him nicely in debt free lifestyle.  He gave you up without any hassle," said Mark fiercely glaring down at me.

I bit back the spasm of pain his words invoked then managed a grim smile instead.  I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of knowing he was one step ahead of me. Not in this and not in anything.  Certainly not anymore!

" Ron meant nothing to me.  I barely knew him. We hadn't even gone out on a first date or anything.  I am glad you paid him off. I am glad he made something from your gullibility! "

I turned to leave then suddenly finding myself free. His lax hold on me reflected the impact of shock that covered every feature of his handsome face.

" If not Ron then who? " Mark's voice stopped me at the door.

"Who  proposed to you?" His voice was rough in repressed anger as he spoke huskily into my ear sending a shiver of awareness down my spine that was anything but repulsed.

I bit back a groan at my own weakness and ignored him. I reached out to tug at the door to his office determined to make my way out of his office whole and unscathed.
