As for today, Meredith was on Dr. Jodie Knight's service, a fairly respected, published general surgeon who just so happened to be the Chief of the department, a title previously held by none other than her mother. She made her way to the patient room, checking and noting down the patient's latest vitals before the attending came in.
Meredith had heard this was a fairly big case; Dr. Summers said something about her being lucky she was starting today, because they had a high profile general surgery case that she would be put on. She didn't realise exactly how big the case was until the room filled with 15 or so interns, an additional six residents and attendings from three different specialties.
A couple of minutes later, Dr. Knight walked in. She was a fairly tall curly haired brunette, with these piercing blue eyes, which reminded her a little of Derek's. She looked intimidating, just like her mother would have liked, Meredith thought.
"Who's presenting?" Dr. Knight asked, barely looking up from the latest CT scan she'd been handed as she walked into the room.
"I am. This is Maya Shaw, 10 years old. Arrived yesterday via airlift from Boston Children's hospital for an exploration and resection of a large abdominal leomyosarcoma, involving the kidney, liver, stomach and intestines. A plan was made to take out all of the affected organs and put them on ice to give the surgical team enough time to remove the entire tumour wrapping around these organs. Latest vitals are all within normal limits, and she was given 10 of morphine fifteen minutes ago to help with pain management." She said confidently, getting looks from a couple of the residents and attendings in the room.
"Now that," Dr. Knight said, pacing around the front of the hospital bed, "that's how you present a case. Take notes, doctors. Well done, Dr ..."
"Grey, Dr. Knight. Meredith Grey." She could hear a couple of the residents behind her scoff, and she turned, her hair resting against her right shoulder as she saw their eyes roll.
"It all makes sense now." one of the residents whispered, and the rest laughed.
"Delaney, Whelan." Dr. Knight appeared behind the two, scowling, "Maybe if you stopped whispering and started actually doing your jobs, you could be as good as Dr. Grey here. It's nothing to do with her mother and everything to do with her dedication and raw talent, two things which you two jackasses clearly do not possess. You two are off this case, and off my service. Go make yourself useful in the ER." She growled, and the two residents from before ran out of the room. She reminded Meredith of Bailey, and Meredith outwardly smiled as she remembered her resident.
"Sorry about that, Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, Maya. We'll take you up in a couple of hours, some one will be in to do pre-op soon. Do you have any more questions?" Meredith asked.
"No, you've explained everything, thank you Dr. Grey." The two parents gave her a reassuring smile, and she smiled back and left the room, where Dr. Knight was waiting for her.
"I'm sorry about Delaney and Whelan. They're idiots, they call them tweedle-dee and tweedle-dumb here, and honestly they're about this close from failing their boards." She made a gesture with her fingers, barely showing a gap, and showing Meredith a big grin.
"Thank you for what you said in there, Dr. Knight". Meredith reciprocated her kindness.
"Don't thank me. With that first impression, you're one of the best residents I've ever worked with. Funnily enough... that's exactly what your mother said about me." Dr. Knight smiled. Of course she too had made the connection - who hadn't at that point. "I get not wanting to be haunted by the shadow of your mother or whatever, but for what it's worth, you are really very talented." Dr. Knight gave her a reassuring nod as she walked off. Meredith sighed deeply and re-composed herself as she walked back to the residents lounge to grab a coffee and read up on Maya's case, not even realising that Jade was in the room.
