Chapter 19

Elijah woke up with someone combing his hair and humming a very familiar song. When he shot his eyes open, Elijah gasped softly and embraced the person.

"Grammie! I missed you! What are you doing here?" Elijah sat up and with a yawn, scanned his eyes around the room. The boy creased his forehead and his eyes started to water when he did not saw Devon.

"Grammie? Where's Dev? I don't see him," Elijah asked in s shaky voice that made Amanda swore internally.

"I'm sorry, Eli. Devon has something--" Amanda's words were cut off when Elijah's phone rang. Elijah's somber expression was instantly replaced with glee when the boy saw Devon's name flashing in the screen.

My grandson is such a lucky ass, Amanda thought and smiled at Elijah who was bouncing on the bed.

Elijah immediately answered the call and brought the phone over his ear. "Hello? Dev?"

"Hey, sunshine. Good morning. How was your sleep?" Devon's baritone voice graced Elijah's ears, making the boy blush softly.

"No nightmares, Dev. Thank you. Where are you? You said you won't leave me alone," Elijah accused Devon with a crack in his voice.

"I'm sorry, sunshine. I just have to deal with the bad guys."

Elijah gasped in horror and glanced at Amanda, then gripped the phone tight. "T-That's scary, Dev. What if something happens to you? You'll also leave me like Lay and...and..."

Devon gritted his teeth when Elijah sobbed on the other line. As much as possible, he doesn't want Elijah to know what he's about to do. That would be traumatic for the boy.

"Sunshine, don't worry about me. I'm strong. I won't get hurt."

Elijah wiped his tears and let Amanda brush his hair. "You promise?"

"I promise, sunshine. Did I ever break my promise to you?"

Elijah shook his head, even if Devon won't be able to see it. "No. You always keep your promises." Elijah chewed his lips nervously and glanced at Amanda, who smiled at him warmly.

"You have to be home before dark, okay? And you have to bathe with me and watch Phineas and Ferb later. Also, you have to carry me around," Elijah demanded like a strict wife, making Devon grin stupidly. After all, those things that Elijah mentioned are like rewards for Devon.

"I will do all of those things, baby, and more. Just enjoy your time with grammie and I'll be back home before you know it," Devon added with a smile on his lips.

Elijah heaved a deep sigh and relented. "Alright. Be careful, Dev. Come home soon."

"I will, sunshine. Why don't you tell grammie what we did yesterday?"

Just like that, Elijah was distracted. The boy ended the call with Devon and Elijah gushed how much fun he had with Devon yesterday over breakfast with Amanda.

HQ Torture Room

Devon released a deep sigh and put his phone in his back pocket. It was a good thing that the torture room was soundproofed. Elijah was not able to hear the tortured screams of the people inside.

"Boss, you're here. We did not wait for you," Rouge greeted Devon with his usual sadistic smirk, and as his name suggests, Rouge's hair is flaming red, his jet-black eyes promising so many dark intentions.
