"I will always be yours, forever and more
Through the push and the pull..."

-Ever Enough, A Rocket to the Moon

Chapter 27

On the way to the rendezvous point,
Three hours before Devon leaves

Devon and Elijah are halfway through the rendezvous point, and Devon feels suffocated every mile he covers. Devon prays that they won't arrive sooner because he wants to spend more time together with Elijah. If Devon can stop time and bottle this specific moment, Devon would give the world to be able to do so. Just me and my sunshine in our own, happy world.

Devon is still debating whether or not he should inform Elijah of his departure, but seeing the boy glow with joy, Devon just couldn't do it. Instead, Devon just tamped down the urge to be completely honest with Elijah and decided to make the most of their time together. Devon won't let this memory be their last together.

"Oh, oh. I like this song, Dev!" Elijah turned up the volume of the stereo and a chill and slow beat of Passenger Seat flowed mellifluously, with Elijah humming at the song. Devon smiled and savored the song, both of their heads swaying to the soft rhythm and turning into a fit of giggles when they sang the wrong lyrics.

When Ever Enough played next, Devon's stomach dropped and an unexplainable sense of misery, guilt, and longing filled Devon's chest. His chest throbbed painfully and Devon felt as if every fiber of his being is being torn to shreds. Unable to control the surge of emotions, Devon pulled over on the side of the road, confusing Elijah, but when the boy saw Devon's pain expression and glistening eyes, Elijah sucked a breath and clutched his chest.

"Dev, are you hurt? Where? Can you tell me so I can help you make it better?" Elijah asked with a worried expression, his fingers gripping the hem of Devon's shirt. Devon's eyes landed on Elijah's trembling hands and gave them a tight squeeze, then brought them to his lips for a tender kiss.

Elijah should be feeling warm and giddy from the sweet gesture, but for reasons unknown to Elijah, his eyes welled with tears and a heavy feeling and a sense of anxiety slowly builds up. Elijah never felt this kind of unease, except when he was locked in that basement.

"Sunshine," Devon called Elijah in a hoarse voice, dripping with sadness and pain. "Can you give me a power hug? Please?" Extreme agitation started to consume Devon as his heart began to get restless with each passing second.

When Devon properly parked the car on the side of the road, Elijah immediately unbuckled his belt and transferred to Devon's lap. Before Devon knew it, he was buried in Elijah's neck, and his heart ached even more when Elijah's wonderful scent enveloped and embraced his senses.

Devon's emotions are a mess. It's the first time he felt this kind of unrest, anguish, and dread roll into one giant ball of negativity. Devon wanted to do something about it, but for some reason, his mind stopped working. Devon couldn't figure out a way to be honest and open to Elijah without causing any damage.

Elijah is a fragile boy, and Devon is doing his best to care for and protect his delicate treasure. To put it simply, Devon can't think of any alternatives because he got fixated on keeping Elijah out of harm in the most effective way. Ineffective and inefficient means never got processed because Devon is too preoccupied to even entertain such ideas.
