Chapter 28
"Hey, sunshine. Good morning," Devon greeted the sleepy Elijah who just softly groaned and scooted towards the owner of the heat. Devon chuckled when Elijah nuzzled on his side and fondly combed Elijah's silky hair. "Come on, sunshine. Let's have some breakfast, hmm?"
Elijah slowly opened his eyes and Devon's deep brown pools filled with amusement welcomed him. Just like that, the sleepy haze dissipated and Elijah reached out his arms for Devon. "Dev, I'm still sleepy, but if you give me a morning hug, I will be awake," Elijah said with a nod and a sheepish grin, and what can Devon do? Devon can't deny his sunshine.
"I would love to, baby," Devon obliged and indulged Elijah, and with a soft giggle, Elijah eagerly wrapped his arms around Devon's neck. Elijah blinked and his heart thumped nervously when Devon's form turned amorphous until Elijah can't touch Devon anymore.
"D-Dev? N-No... d-don't... no... don't leave me, Dev," Elijah begged in a trembling voice, his body shaking and his eyes blurry from tears. "Dev. Dev!" Elijah clutched his chest to reduce the pain and tightness, but the hurt never dissipated and it just intensified. Elijah climbed down from the bed and tried to reach for Devon but Devon just keeps getting farther with each step until Elijah can't see Devon anymore. "Dev!"
Elijah woke up chasing his breath, his shirt drenched in sweat and his body trembling. When he glanced at the digital clock, it's only one in the morning. Elijah sucked a mouthful of air to ease the tight feeling in his chest, but for some reason, it only became painful.
Elijah wiped his tears away and got out of his bed. He went to his closet and changed his clothes. He had to try because he would get sick and Devon would worry. Even if his limbs are not willing to cooperate and he feels huge debris crashing against his body, Elijah has to try. With a sniffle, he reached for Devon's shirt and inhaled it softly, then burst into tears when Devon's familiar and comforting scent filled his nose and embraced his senses.
"I miss you so much, Dev. Come back," Elijah said softly and changed his shirt, then brought Devon's shirt back into his bed. Elijah can't sleep properly without Devon, and at the very least, Devon's scent helps Elijah calm down.
Elijah reached for the remote and turned on the TV, then played media content. Devon's handsome face filled the screen, melancholy was deeply hidden from outside view, but from the many times Elijah played the video, Elijah was able to notice that flash of anguish.
"Hey, sunshine. How are you? I hope that..." Elijah embraced Devon's shirt and fixed his gaze on the screen. Elijah won't be able to sleep now, so he will just watch the video to pass the time. It has been Elijah's habit for almost two weeks now. The first week was agonizing, afflicting, and excruciating for Elijah.
When Elijah woke up, he had to rest for a few minutes to lose the dizzy spell, and when it did, the first person he looked for was Devon. Elijah did not pay attention to the new room because his mind is only filled with Devon, and Devon's final words to him before he was forced to sleep. There must be an explanation as to why Devon resorted to that method. Elijah needs to find Devon and ask for the latter's explanation.
"Dev? Dev!" Elijah can't explain the agitation and nervousness that he's feeling. They are weighing him down. His ears are ringing and his heart is beating so loud. His mind is a mess and is only fixated on finding Devon. The restlessness that Elijah feels will only fade if Elijah catches a glimpse of Devon.
Robert and Amanda who were talking in the kitchen were alarmed when they heard Elijah's distressed voice. Amanda sighed heavily and glanced at his husband who also seemed troubled. "This is not going to be easy. Elijah will be so heartbroken. The boy has been so dependent on Primo that..." Amanda was not able to finish her words when Elijah burst into the kitchen, frantic and confused.
