Since River was barred from the facility until further notice, and since she’d completed a four hour work out, she decided to arrive to Deviant early and help set up. There was going to be a performer there that night, and for that reason, they were changing the layout a bit. The guest DJ was bringing along a few celebrities to sing and dance around the stage that River was in the midst of setting up.
She grabbed one of the speakers to move on top of the stage, and hands moved to help her lift it. “Be careful, that’s heavy.” A man’ voice offered.
River let go of the speaker, which was barely off the ground when the man tried to help her, and spun to face the mystery man. “What the hell kid? Are you new here or something?” She hissed.
She found herself facing a young, rather thin looking kid. He wasn’t Korean, that was for sure. Possibly Japanese? Maybe not, but she was too pissed to bother asking. It didn’t matter to her anyways. He was tall, taller than River, and his black hair was long, straight and textured, brushed just barely out of his eyes. He wore a flannel, which was unbutton and had the sleeves rolled up. Underneath was a ‘Save Rock & Roll’ shirt, and he wore a pair of tattered jeans that hung from his frame. Had he heard of a sandwich? He smiled, and she immediately felt bad for shouting at him. “Yeah, actually, I am.”
River bit the inside of her lip. “Hee-Bong will fire you if you aren’t wearing the standard uniform. There are a few extra in the back, but I don’t think they’ll be small enough,” She said, looking him over again. “Have you eaten in the past month?”
He laughed, and it was, surprisingly, musical. “Yeah, actually, I have. Lunch was actually pretty nice today. Maybe tomorrow I could get breakfast.”
River laughed. “You might need it.”
“I think it’d be a good idea for you to come along. You know, just to make sure I do, in fact, eat?”
River was stunned silent for a moment. Clearly the kid had no clue who she was. New workers often thought that she was just the bartender, not the woman who signed their paycheck. “I don’t think it’s professional for me to date an employee.”
He looked surprised. “Oh! Oh, uhm, I’m so sorry, I didn’t know you were the co-owner, I should have introduced myself.”
“That’s alright. I learn employee names pretty quick, so I’ll have you figured out by the end of the night.” She said, bending and picking up the speaker again.
His brow furrowed. “Employee?”
At this moment, the back room door opened and Hee-Bong emerged, throwing his arms out. “Ah, Mr.Isobe!” He said, laughing and moving towards the boy. He slapped a hand on the boys shoulder and smiled at him. “It has been some time, my dear boy.” The boy nodded, offering a smile, though unlike the one he’d flashed at River, this one showed no teeth. “River, come meet tonight’s headliner.”
Headliner?
