Chapter II
"Do you know how to play the piano, Charlotte?" Vaughan tried to asked some random questions about me.
We were on the drawing room, sitting uncomfortably and talking like a couple of idiots.
We were forced to always stay together and the maids are everywhere to spy on us. That's why he's been nagging me early in the morning.
"Can you please shut your mouth for just a second, Vaughan? Naiirita na ako sa mga tanong mo," naiinis kong bulong sa kanya. This kid is so talkative.
Kaagad din naman itong natahimik. I felt bad for him but he's really getting into my nerves. Nag-uusap naman kami ng matino nitong nakaraang araw. I've known the childish side of him and he told me that he's comfortable being around me because I'm like an older sister to him.
If only Elijah was here, magkakaroon ako ng mas matinong kausap kaysa kay Vaughan. Ngunit may iniutos sa kanya ang aming ama kung kaya't ilang araw na akong pagala-galang mag-isa sa malaking bahay na ito at tanging si Vaughan lang ang aking nakakausap. Sometimes, Katherine and Morpheus visits Vaughan and the Viscount was being boisterous while his eldest daughter keeps flirting with Elijah which the latter disapprovingly shrugged.
Palagi ring inuusisa ng biskonde ang pagsasama naming dalawa ni Vaughan and the little kid will lie about us having fun all day. Ako naman ay hindi na nagsalita pa tungkol doon. Ano pa ba ang mangyayari kapag magrereklamo pa ako? My father won't listen to me, my mother trusts my father so much that she actually believed that this marriage will work, and my wise yet powerless brother can't help me.
"I'm sorry, Charlotte. Alam kong naiirita ka na sa akin but don't worry, I'll go home tomorrow," mahinang sambit ni Vaughan sa aking tabi.
Napatingin ako sa kanya. I raised my brows. Why is he going home so suddenly? I though he'll stay here by the end of August at pagkatapos ay sabay kaming pupunta sa Scarborough University para sa pagsisimula ng aming klase.
"Why so sudden?" I asked.
He flashed a boyish grin. "Akala ko ba ay ayaw mo ako rito sa bahay niyo? Will you gonna miss me?"
I rolled my eyes and fixed the few strands of my hair that is dangling on my face.
"No, I thought that you'll stay here forever. It's a good thing, they will get rid of you."
We both laughed at my retort.
He told me that his father wanted him to go back for a few days and after that, he'll stay here until the end of the summer.
The next day, I was waving my hand goodbye at my little friend. Ako lamang ang naghatid sa kanya sa labas ng mansiyon kung nasaan nakaparada ang kanilang karwahe.
"I will surely miss you, Charlotte. Even though you're not that nice to me, I still like you as my older sister than Katherine," tumawa ito ng mahina.
I patted his head. Kahit na mas matanda ako sa kanya ay magkasing-tangkad na kami.
"Sana huwag ka nang bumalik pa, Vaughan. I'm tired of taking care of a sixteen year old. I look like your nanny for gods sake!" I snickered jokingly and he gave me a funny look, with gratitude visible on his eyes.
I waved my hand goodbye as the door of his carriage closed. Nang makalayo na ito ay saka ko lamang naisipang pumasok sa loob ng bahay but I was shocked when my father was standing on our front gate. He looked out of place even though he owned the place. Nasanay akong makita siyang nasa loob ng kanyang pribadong opisina kung kaya't nagulat ako dahil narito siya sa labas ng aming mansion.
Inilahad nito ang kanyang kamay sa akin na mas lalong nagpadagdag sa aking pagkagulat. Dahan-dahan kong inabot ang kanyang kamay at nagsimula kaming maglakad ng tahimik at mabagal.
