Chapter XXIV

I'm a coward. I have the power to run after Bill. I have the power to find them. But I didn't. I am afraid of what Bill or Lois may feel when they see me. I lied and I am ashamed of what I did. William probably loathe me to the core now.

I sucked my breath before smiling to another proud wealthy man. God, this party is boring. No wonder Elijah refused to attend.

"Miss Hayhurst, right?" may isang lalaking tumabi sa akin. He looks fine, maybe a little bit older than me. He has a stubbles forming on his face, his slightly long hair touches his shoulders that made him look unorganized. He has this friendly smile so I guess I'll be nice to him too.

"I'm Rupert Montclair, host of this gathering," he smiled and offered his hand. I put mine above his and he took it and brought to his lips to kiss my knuckles. Napangiti ako dahil doon. He's not bad, maybe because I felt that he is truly nice.

"Thank you for inviting us, Lord Montclair. I am afraid my father cannot come for the reason that I know you already know of," I smiled politely.

He nodded curtly. "I understand, Miss Hayhurst. I'm glad a fine young woman like you still has the freedom to attend gatherings like this."

Muli akong ngumiti at napatingin sa mga taong nag-uusap. Maya-maya ay nagsimula nang tumugtog ang mga musikero. What's a party without a little dancing? Many old people gathered on the center of the hall.

Naramdaman ko naman ang paggalaw ni Rupert sa aking tabi. I looked at him and his hands are already waiting for me.

"You being here is highly acknowledged, please allow me to dance with you tonight," he said softly.

It was like he hypnotized me. I was enthralled by this man. I accepted his hand and he led me to the center of the dancefloor. Many couples are slow dancing, just moving along with the music.

Maya-maya pa ay bigla itong bumilis. People around me are hyped. It was until all of us are jumping and swaying happily when the musicians changed their tunes and went back to the first song. People danced like they have all the time in the world. I could see lovers hugging each other while swaying with the beat.

I sighed and closed my eyes. Nang buksan ko ito ay nagulat ako nang makita ko si Bill sa aking harapan. I gasped and blinked again only to realize that it was Rupert, not William. I sighed heavily and slightly pushed him away. Bumalik ako sa dati kong upuan at iniwan si Rupert sa gitna. I felt sorry I didn't finish the dance with him but I wanna go home.

Hindi inaasahang mapatingin ako sa malaking pintuan ng bulwagan. My heart went insane when I met a mysterious yet familiar pair of green eyes. Nanlaki ang aking mga mata at naestatwa ako sa aking kinauupuan. The guy cut our longing gaze short and turned his back on me.

It felt like my feet has mind of their own. Kahit na nangangatog ang aking mga binti sa kaba na aking nadarama ay mabilis ko pa ring hinabol si Bill. I ran as fast as I could to catch up with him. I looked in every corner of Rupert's grand mansion but I still couldn't find him. And then my eyes caught a figure standing in the shadows of the wide garden. I know its him. Saulo ko ang kanyang tindig pati ang kanyang pangangatawan.

I slowly made my way to him. My chest hurts, my legs felt like jelly and I'll melt in this place in no time.

"You should enjoy the party. You shouldn't waste your time running after me," he said.

Nagulat ako sa kanyang sinabi.

"What are you talking about, Bill? It's not a waste of time chasing you. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry for lying."
