Chapter XIX
I rolled my eyes and erased the numbers I've previously written on my parchment. How could numbers make my head ache like this? I've been trying to solve this math equation Rayne gave me as an assignment but to no avail, I suck at understanding numbers but I've got to try. I am a Hayhurst and I've been living on a family of royal entrepreneurs so I know I can do this.
"Ate Charlotte! Look at my kite!" masayang sigaw ni Lois sa hindi kalayuan.
Nasa parang kami kasama si Reneé dahil ako ang nagbabantay sa kanilang dalawa ngayon. While they were playing, I took the chance to finish my tasks. Kirsten and the girls are trying to calm the people of Kershaw because of the sudden appearance of the palace guards. Ang sabi nila ay hindi naman masama ang mga nangyayari. If we stay calm and I will hide and listen to what they say, I'll be safe and the people too.
I gave the child a two thumbs-up before returning to my work.
I was so caught up in solving my little problem when I heard a loud scream coming from Reneé. Kaagad akong napatingin sa kanilang dalawa. And few meters from me, I could see how Lois fell helplessly on the ground.
It's like a deja vu of when I first saw him falling beneath that tree. Kumalabog ang aking dibdib at nagmadaling tumakbo papunta sa kanilang dalawa. He was trying to catch his breath while clutching his chest.
My whole body went numb and I tried to force myself to stay focused and help Lois. I tried to carry him on my back and Reneé leads the way, shouting for immediate help.
Nang makalapit kami sa kabahayan ay nakita namin si Rayne kung kaya't nagmadali itong tumulong sa amin. We took Lois to the clinic where the nurse immediately assisted him.
I sat on the waiting area, still feeling the numbness and coldness of my palms. Nasa tabi ko si Reneé at si Rayne naman ay tinawag si Bill.
Pareho kaminh tahimik dahil hindi namin alam ang sasabihin. Dalawang beses na naming nakita ang pag-aagaw buhay ni Lois at walang ibang dulot iyon kundi takot at pangamba sa kung ano ang pupweding mangyari sakanya.
It was late in the afternoon when Kirsten, Audrey and William rushed to the clinic. Kanina pa lumabas ang nurse at si Lois naman ay payapang natutulog sa loob ng isang puting silid.
"What happened, Lauren? Is he alright?" nag-aalalang tanong ni Bill sa nurse.
Agad akong tumayo upang daluhan siya dahil halata sa kanyang mukha ang pagod at takot sa nangyari kay Lois.
Umiling si Nurse Lauren at malungkot na sinabi ang katotohanan sa amin. "His heart is getting weaker day by day, William. I advise you to go to more operative hospitals in the city. I can't assure you anything in this small clinic of mine, what you need is the new advance technologies they use in Capitol hospitals."
Napailing naman si Bill. "We don't have money for that."
Umiling din ang nurse. "That's the only way to save your brother, William."
Nang gabing iyon ay sinamahan ko si Bill na bantayan si Lois sa loob ng clinic. We decided to let him sleep in there dahil masyado pa siyang mahina para ilipat sa kanilang bahay.
"You should eat, Lois. These berries are good for your heart," I tried to feed him but shook his head and just looked on the white walls of the bedroom.
"Listen to your Ate Charlotte, Elois. It's for your own good," ani ni William na umupo sa aking tabi ngunit hindi siya pinansin ni Lois.
We both sighed and left the bowl of berries on the bedside table before settling on the couch nearby.
