The world was swirling around you, and there was nothing you could do about it.
You didn't know how to fight; while enrolled under the HPSC, X had been doing most of the work and you relied on your quirk, which was relatively self-sufficient, to do everything. Your mind and body were not fast, nor agile, nor strong enough to truly engage in battle.
For that reason, you had a hard time following Touya and Keigo's movements.
It was dark outside, perhaps around midnight, marking a full 24-hours since you'd discovered Dabi was Touya, and your childhood friend was alive.
Woah.
That seemed so much longer in your head.
Why was everything going so fast?
'Move out of the way, you dunce!' X roared at you, tugging your shirt by the collar and throwing you across the street, right out of reach of the hands of flames that were raging out of the fire-user, who was hell-bent on landing a hit on Keigo.
Just like a dunce would, you sat there, on the pavement, frozen in shock. You couldn't help but think, wow, that fire is gorgeous. You also noticed that there was a small rock digging into the skin of the palm of your hand, which you were pressing down on in order to stay upright and watch the fight.
None of this felt real.
'(y/n), you're really choosing now of all times to pay attention to a literal rock?!'
You took notice that you were shaking. "No, I... Uh... Um, I don't... what's happening... why are they fighting..."
'You sound like a fucking helpless child, you know that?'
She was right; you had to do something.
And fast.
"Dabi, wait, think this through!" Keigo yelled out, maneuvering himself into the air where he had more agility and could properly avoid the flames. You briefly remembered that he had told you that he doesn't mix well with fire, and couldn't help but think how utterly unlucky he was to get matched up like this.
"Don't tell me what to do, hero," Touya seethed, especially the last word. He spun around, his arm lifting up to burn a feather that had snuck up on him from behind, thus swirling his flames around him like a ballerina of chaos.
Small winces of pain escaped Keigo's lips as each feather went up in smoke. Right, he could feel everything they did, so he must be burning, over and over again, unable to do anything about it except dodge.
At this rate, he's going to die.
You blinked.
Holy shit, he's going to die.
'Isn't that what you wanted?' X reminded you. 'You wanted to be free with Touya, and this is the only way for that to happen.'
You blinked again.
This time, when your eyes opened up again, you didn't look at the fire. You looked at the face illuminated by it, those honey eyes and golden brows creased up together, sweat dribbling down his forehead, and agony plastered all over his face.
"I don't... want him to die," you said out loud. Somehow, in a way you didn't quite understand, saying things out loud really bring down the reality of it upon you. "I don't want Keigo to die," you repeated.
'Then do something about you, you pussy.'
The taunt was most definitely not what you wanted to hear right now, but you still needed that push; you aren't going to let either one of them die. One side of your mind cried out that you couldn't live with Keigo without Touya dying, and you couldn't live with Touya without Keigo dying, but you were past realistic expectations now. You needed to know they were going to be alright, then afterwards you could figure everything out.
