the boy sat, fiddling with a candle that he had found in a random drawer in the house. it was lavender scented, his favourite scent, which is why he was drawn to it in the first place.

"mom!" the teen exclaimed, "can we light this?"
"i don't think that's a good idea," his mother stated, "it could be a fire hazard."
"yeah, but i really like this scent... it calms me down."
"not now, honey, i'm working. let's do this another time."

bawling his fists, the boy sucked in a deep breath.

"fine." he muttered under his breath, rage slowly filling him as he made his way to the kitchen drawer.

it's always, 'i'm busy.' when are you not busy? you never have time for us, you're always just doing your own things. well, not today.

arriving at the kitchen he dug through the drawers, searching for a lighter. but, he was unsuccessful. it seemed that all of the lighters in the house had vanished. his parents kept things in the exact same place all of the time, so either they had hid the lighters, or somehow all of them had broken.

finding the latter pretty unlikely, the boy became angrier. they did this on purpose. he believed.

well, i'm going to light this candle, and that's that.

turning on the kitchen stove, he ran the wick under the blue flame, and watched as it lit up almost instantly.

satisfied with his small act of rebellion, the boy smirked to himself. take that, mom.

leaving the candle on the counter, he went off to find his twin sister.

knocking on her bedroom door, he entered after hearing her yell, "come in!"

"whatcha' doing?" he asked, peering over her shoulder at her laptop after he had jumped on the bed next to her.
"writing a chapter for my story," she replied, "would you like to read it?"
"of course!" he smiled, gladly, as he took the laptop from her and scrolled to the top of the document.

as he read, he entered a whole new world. it was as if each word transported him somewhere else, enticing him even more with each sentence. his sister was a gem of a writer.

"this is so good!" he exclaimed, looking at his sister.
"really?" her face lit up, "you're not just saying that because you're my brother?"
"of course not," the boy reassured, "you could even get published!"
"you really think so?"
"i know so." he smiled.
"hey, how about we go show mom and dad?" he offered, "i'm sure they'd love to read."
"i don't know," the girl lowered their head, "what if they don't like it?"
"they will like it. because you're an amazing writer."

chuckling and grabbing his hand, the sister dragged her brother downstairs, bustling with joy at the thought of receiving praise from their parents.

however, the sight the twins saw when they arrived downstairs was not what they had imagined.

they thought they'd reach their mother, typing away on her laptop as usual, their dad locked away in his study, doing the same. but, that was he exact opposite of what they saw. their parents stood with heaps of items in their arms, shoving all of them into a duffel bag. ]

"kids!" their dad shouted, "don't come down here for now. it's alright."

however, alright was the exact opposite of what it was. their parents were running everywhere, covering their faces with their sleeves as they tried to shield their airways from the intense amount of smoke that had engulfed the living room area. they twins couldn't see it, but they could smell it and hear it.

there was a fire.

they did as they were told, staying on the staircase, in each others' embrace, waiting for the next instruction from their parents.

soon enough, their mother had come.

"i need you guys to take this duffel bag and go outside," she instructed, calmly, "i'm also going to give you this phone. call the fire department and say, 'i would like to report an incident.' and tell them our address."

by this time, the two were in tears.

the girl asked, "what about you guys?"

"don't worry about us," their mother reassured, before planting kisses one each of their foreheads, "go."

and they did what they were told.

running out of the house, the boy dialled the fire department, and soon enough, they were on their way.

---

"who was responsible for this?" the police officer questioned the boy.

it had been two days since the fire, since the twins' parents passes away. with them being the only witnesses to the event, the police had nobody else to question.

the boy had thought out his plan. he knew he was at fault. but, he couldn't go to prison. that was the one thing he could never accept.

so, he lied.

"it was my sister," he confessed, "i saw her do it."
