There're so many folders on this pendrive that's insane.
It appears that my mom had a lot of cases to work on. Not surprising that she was always so tired.
I type some key words into the search section.
I get a folder pop up immediately.
Folder 'Subway bombing'
I found you.
This was my mom's last case.
And how do I know?
Well, I was sick at the time and she had to stay at home with me. I remember she was making phone calls and checking her computer all day for days. And she didn't see me, but I heard her out sometimes. And I remember that she was talking about some bombing stuff.
Of course I was a curious kid. I got my laptop and searched it. And I heard it right. She was working on a case in connection with the Subway bombing.
Then what happens?
My parents get killed about 2 weeks after.
I don't think it's just a coincidence. And I know it's not enough for proving that this case might be connected to my parents' death. But, somehow I just have a feeling that I'm going the right way.
''Wasn't the bombing responsible for the death of Liz's parents?'' I ask Katie.
''Yes. Why?''
''Cause it seems that my mother was working on the case.'' I say pointing at the screen.
''Oh my God!''
My mom collected so many things about this case. She was a very good cop. And she was a very good mom, and a good person. The world needs so many people like her...
I'm scrolling through a bunch of photos, articles, names...
Wait a minute...
My eyes get stuck on a name.
Clay Burton?
'Clay Burton commits suicide as captured in his home...'
''Oh shit!''
''What?''
''A guy killed himself. He was a suspect.'' I say pointing at that line where it's mentioned. ''And here's an address. I think my mom found out for real where these guys were hiding.''
''Hunter.'' I feel Katie's hand touch my hand.
''I'm going there.'' I say and suddenly stand up making my laptop fall to the ground.
Shit!
''No, you're not. Are you crazy?!'' I hear Katie say. ''And do you think you could still find anything there? It's been 8 years Hunter. 8.''
I don't answer her, just quickly take my laptop and throw it into my backpack.
''Hunter!'' Katie calls up again.
''I know Katie. I know. But you can never be sure enough. It's worth a try.'' I explain and get out of her way.
''Hunter, I won't let you go alone. I'm not gonna risk you getting hurt. Hunter stop! Hunter!'' She shouts after me.
''What?'' I turn around.
''I'm not gonna let you go alone. Do you have a death wish?''
''Not if it would be the first time.'' I say and let out a nervous laugh, but regret immediately for opening my mouth.
''What do you mean?'' She asks with a questioning look.
Shit!
''Whatever. Just drop it!'' I turn away.
''Hunter.'' She grabs my hand. ''You know me well enough that I won't drop it.'' She turns me by my face to see her. ''What do I not know about? I know you're hiding something. And I won't leave you until you don't tell me.'' She says looking deep into my eyes.
She surely won't drop it.
''Okay. But you better sit down.'' I say without looking at her.
''Why? What happened? Tell me! What do you mean it wasn't the first time?''
She looks super worried. Shit!
I have never planned to tell her this. But now it seems that it's time to reveal what happened 3 years ago.
I take a deep breath and say it...
''It means that I tried to kill myself before. 3 years ago.''
