The boys reminisce about what they heard on the radio in Mike's basement whilst El was laying on her side on the couch. Dustin was quickly trying to tell Ethan that what they heard was Will crying for help, and they think they tuned in on the Byers' radio or something. Will had said wherever he was, it was cold, dark and empty.
Like home.
But it was dark.
Empty.
Cold.
They said the radio kept going in and out. Ethan was trying to comfort El, since she was basically drained of her power and strength. He feeds her waffles and milk, and offers some children's medicine for her headache, which she cautiously declines.
"Like home? Like his house?" Mike suggests
"Or maybe like Hawkins" Lucas points out
"Upside Down" El squeaks
"What'd she say?" Lucas asks
"Upside Down" Ethan repeats, rushing over the the D&D board at the table, Mike following him as he has the same idea.
"When El showed us where Will was, she flipped the board over, remember?" He starts, flipping the board over again
"The Upside Down" Ethan continues, "Dark, empty, cold. The opposite of basically The Right Side Up, here."
"Do you understand this?" Lucas asks Dustin
"No"
"When El took us to find Will, she took us to his house, right? What if he actually was there. But in another... dimension?"
"What?"
Mike elaborates for Ethan, "What if he was there? What if we just couldn't see him? What if he was on the other side?"
"This-" He flips the board over to the right side, "-is... like Hawkins. And..." He flips the board back over to the plain, black side, "This is where Will is."
"Like the Veil Of Shadows" Dustin suggests
"Veil of Shadows... Veil of Shadows!" Ethan smiles, running over to the coffee table in front of the couch.
He grabs the Dungeons and Dragons handbook and quickly flips to the page about the Veil Of Shadows dimension, and hands it to Dustin as he reads it aloud.
"The Veil Of Shadows is a dimension that is a dark reflection or echo of our world."
"Exactly," Eth takes the book from Dustin to quickly read through and simplify the next parts. He sets it back down to sign, "It's a place of darkness, decay and death. It's right next to you and you don't even see it."
"An alternate dimension" Mike nods, piecing the information together.
