plot:

THE CONSTANT need for academic validation. What seemed to be the only source of self-worth the top students at shermer high school that made it their own mission to outwit the other until it came time for graduation. The junior class consisting of the very two tied for first: deborah tucker and brian johnson. Though the two never made it known they knew of the other in class, no less paid the other any mind if they were together during a class period, they knew that they were constantly equals.

With a family history of alumni at Dartmouth, Deborah had her focus set on graduating as valedictorian come next year. The pressure from both her parents and the expectations set from her older sister attending the very same college looking over her shoulder constantly, there was never much room for a break. Which would make it hard to believe for anyone that the student with the notoriously clean record and president of the student council could find themselves stuck anywhere near a saturday in detention.

notes:

• gets detention for trying to skip class and go off campus to go to an autograph signing for the Pixies in the mall the next town over

• ^peer pressured to do it from another member of the student council and she ended up being too scared to follow through but caught by Vernon who didn't believe her story and told her she'd have detention anyways

• finds out later about brian's story and is sympathetic over the pressure

• gifted-kid burnout things and how exhausting college is a v. constant issue for her in particular

• struggles with what she actually wants to do and not just what her family expects of her

• both her and brian have this realization that they could've just been friends this whole time instead of just ignoring the other

• not necessarily enemies just rivals and their conversation before the Saturday in detention is minimal

• debbie has an older sister who is in her second year at dartmouth
