Nightmares

During the day, I dread the coming sleep

I dread the time when sleep arrives: night

As I lie in bed, slowly and steadily sleep creeps

And my head begins to fill with fright

I close my eyes, and allow the darkness to consume me

Eyes peer at me from shadowy veils

I scream and thrash, asking them to leave me be

Oh no they scream, they have more to entail

They laugh at me, fill my mind with torment

I try to turn away, but their grip keeps me held

The laughs, the screams, they all begin to augment

I think I see the light of day, but I can't tell

But I dread the day, as it longer saves me from fright

As my nightmares have escaped the night
