Davina felt her body propel forwards through the bush, Bucky close on her tail. She felt as if she was flying, going so fast her feet seemed to barely touch the mud surface.
Bucky's flesh hand pressed against the small of her back roughly, urging her body forwards as the pair whipped through the trees.
The could hear muffled yells from behind them, presumably Steve's urgent demands.
Davina's mind raced, she couldn't manage to pinpoint one singular thought in her head apart from the obvious, don't slow down.
She knew Bucky could run faster, yet he stayed behind on her tail, mere centimeters behind her running form.
Wind yanked wildly at her stray wisps of hair, uprooted branches covering the woodland floor seemed desperate at slowing the pair down.
Davina felt her body growing tired, invisible weights seemed to grow in the soles of her shoes and aching shoulders.
Bucky's voice was blurred behind her. "Don't slow down Vina!" She could barely comprehend his words through the sounds of gaining yells and wind crawling through her ears.
Hiding was no longer an option, she looked to her side to see Bucky's running form move from behind her towards her left.
Davina stole a quick glance behind her to see the red, white and blue uniform surprisingly close.
Time was running out, with Steve following their trail by only a few yards, options were running out.
Her brain racked with possible outcomes of escape... There weren't many.
Wind caught in her eyes and she felt the water start to sting, they weren't both going to make it out of this, one of them must escape though.
Davina whipped her head towards Bucky, her eyes pleading.
He stole concerned glanced at her.
"Bucky-" She breathed heavily.
"No Doll, come on keep running its okay." His voice was shaking in tune to the heavy breathing escaping his mouth.
Davina's voice trembled as she spoke, exhausted from the sprinting. "He won't give up Buck, it's not you he wants."
She could see him shaking his sweaty head as they whipped around the tall trees.
"Don't Vina."
"Run James, I'll find you, I promise." Davina forced a smile on her face as she watched Bucky run faster, leaving her to trail behind.
She heard the Captains pleading yells from behind her and she whipped around the face his slowing form.
He slowed to a stop, eyes wide and desperate, chest heaving heavily.
"Your not going near him." Davina's voice wavered slightly. She knew she couldn't take him, the positions would be even worse once Sam caught up, the least she could do was buy him time at this point.
"You don't understand. He needs help." The captain's shield swung slightly in his grasp, his stance was clear to be waiting the attempted fight.
Davina's eyes narrowed behind Steve to the figure of Sam Wilson who had just arrived to stand in a proud stance behind Steve.
"He doesn't want your help." Davina spat, anger flaring through her body, these people just didn't understand.
Not everyone wants to be saved.
"You have no idea what that man is capable of-" Sam's layered voice was cut off by Steve's hand on his chest, halting him from anymore incoming words.
"I know more than you would think." Davina's words were slow and stalling, the woods were vast and wide, Bucky needed enough time to get out of them. These men would scout the entirety of the woods before leaving them, she hoped Bucky knew that.
"She's stalling Steve we need to go!" The urgency in Sam's voice was heavy.
"I know what she's doing Sam, i'm not dumb." Steve whispered shallowly.
"No harm will come to you, just tell us where he went and you can be on your way." Steve spoke, eyes directly firm onto her own gaze.
Davina lowered her hand to the knife and lifted it slowly from its band around her thigh, eyes never leaving Steve's.
She took a shallow breath. "That's not going to happen."
Bucky hadn't taught her much self defence, certainly not enough to take on his former best friend and the crack dealer wearing the bird costume, but enough for her to stall.
"Steve, go after Bucky, i'll bring her in."
Steve took off in a sudden sprint in the direction Bucky had ran, not before Davina's knife left her grasp and found home lodged into his right shoulder.
She forced her foot up to kick Steve straight in the chest and he fumbled backwards in pain, ripping the knife from his bloodied flesh.
She saw Steve drop the knife towards the grass as Sam launched himself towards her in attempt to pin her body to the ground.
She rolled on the floor as he reached her and kicked behind both kneecaps, causing him to stumble forwards, landing on his knees.
Sam didn't stay down long enough for Davina to get up. He grabbed her ankle and pulled, forcing her chin into the dirt as she slid along the mud.
Davina wrapped her hands around a narrow tree in attempt to use it as an anchor as she heaved her other leg up to smash it back down towards his face.
Before the heel of her boot could meet his nose, Davina felt her body yanked roughly from the mud and held in a strong grip by Sam's companion.
"Steve I can handle this! Go get Bucky!" Sam shrieked furious demands in Steve's direction as Davina thrashed wildly in his grasp. It was no use, they got her.
She heard Steve's grumbled voice from above her head. "It's too late, she was stalling for a reason Sam, he got away." On the last three words Davina was roughly pushed around to face him.
"What are you doing!? He needed out help!" Steve yelled wildly.
Davina glared coldly at his expression. "You really don't get it do you Steve... He doesn't want your help."
Steve pressed his lips together in a thin line, eyes narrowed towards the defiant girl before him.
"Come on Steve, she's coming back to the compound." Sam's voice broke through the tense barrier between the two.
"If she knows where he is, we'll get her to spill. Like you said, he's gone, there's no use staying out here."
Silence filled the open air around them as Steve nodded in agreement.
Davina felt metal cuffs clutch around her wrists and she was lightly pushed forwards.
"Don't even think about running." Sam's eyes shone angrily at her and the small group trudged forwards, back in the direction they had come, away from Bucky.
Davina blocked out Sam and Steve's quiet conversation as they walked, she couldn't help but smile slightly as they passed the recked bush the duo had been hiding in a short hour ago.
She'd finally done it, she'd finally done something good.
Davina muffled her smile with a shallow cough as Steve stole a glare in her direction.
Butterflies danced around her stomach, this is a good thing, she desperately tried to convince her mind as they walked in silence through the trees.
