Lyra's POV

I woke up groggily, and suppressed a groan as I grimaced below a blinding headache.

I heard shuffling beside me and I recognized Sokka's steps.

I stretched, and pulled off the blindfold. It was stuck to some dry skin so that told me that it had been several hours since I had forced water into the dry skin.

"You're awake!" Sokka cried in surprise.

"Yeah, I kinda noticed" I gritted sarcastically.

I brushed my fingers through my hair, and found to my displeasure that it was charred along the sides. I hadn't even noticed it earlier. I really had to talk to La later.

"So uh- what happened?" I asked as I cleared my throat.

Sokka shrugged,

"You passed out, nice moves though!" He complimented me.

"Thanks, took more energy than I would've liked" I grunted and stood up.

My knees felt like weak gelatin and I wobbled for a moment before regaining my balance.

"Everyone else is outside" Sokka notified me.

I thanked him as I stepped into my boots and secured them. My long hair was charred at the ends leaving it half burnt. I'd deal with it later.

Sokka walked out with me, and notified Katara of me waking up.

"So what's the plan, now?" I asked as I met with my group outside.

Aang shrugged,

"I guess we keep heading north" Aang answered nonchalantly.

"I guess so" Katara agreed.

------

The town had given us some traveling supplies and the kebabs man ended up giving us some dry rice, and some dried fish flakes for our journey.

He grinned as we took off and waved us off.

I smiled, happy for the man who had found his new passion. Glass making. The volcano had taught him things he hadn't known about himself.

He had found a new sub-bending form, glass bending, and he intended to hone it.

As we flew off, I couldn't help but hope dad was doing well. I felt homesick, but my home was here.

---

The next time we landed was after Sokka spotted something. I wasn't able to recognize the item until I had cut myself on it,

"Ow, fuck! That hurt like a bitch" I grumbled.

"Sokka, it's a whale bone arrow!" I yelled, holding the arrow by the shaft. Blood dripped from the wound and I put my hand over the arrow to stop my blood from getting on it. I paled in both my own horror and shock at a realization as the beads of blood floated midair from my bending.

"So then blood bending is a thing.." I gulped sickly.

"Lovely" I muttered sarcastically. This wasn't exactly a discovery I had wanted to make. More like it was a possibility I had put back in my mind in denial. But now I couldn't deny it.

"What's you find?" Sokka yelled behind me.

I handed him the arrow and I found myself speechless at the deadly bending technique.

The thought of bending someone's blood repulsed me greatly, and I shuddered.

"You look like you've seen a ghost" Aang commented.

I laughed nervously,

"Nope, just cut myself on the arrow. Woo! That thing's sharp!" I said with a fake smile and flipped my wrist so Aang could see, "also, can't see- so, kinda hard to see a ghost!" I grinned falsely.

Aang shrugged and Sokka recognized the weapon,

"It is a whale bone arrow! See if you can find anything else" he ordered.

I nodded taking on a serious look.

Katara walked into the small clearing,

"Did someone lose something?" She asked.

I shook my head, and continued searching.

"No, we found something!" Aang answered cheerfully.

In my search in the bushes I found more arrows, a few of them seemed charred to the touch.

Sokka had found one as well,

"It's burned" he declared. He turned to a tree and found deep cuts.

"There was a battle" he said in realization,

"Water tribe warriors, ambushed a group of fire benders. The fire benders fought back, but the warriors drove them down this hill-" Sokka paused and we ran over some rocks to reach a sandy shore.

"So then what happened?" Asked Aang.

"I don't know the trail ends here" Sokka frowned. He was hopeful, so was I. I thought we'd found dad. At least that was what I had thought until my waterbending hooked to a docked boat.

"Guys wait! Look over there!" I said and pointed towards the boat.

"She's right!" Katara smiled

"It's one of our boats!" Sokka realized.

"Is this- dads boat?" Katara asked.

"No, but it's from his fleet"

"That's gotta be good!" I grinned.

"Dad was here" Sokka nodded with a soft smile.

______

We camped out at the boat in hopes that the boat wasn't abandoned.

Sokka collected some berries, and I roasted some catfish over a fire Katara had started.

Sokka seemed just as down as I was.

He stared deep into the fire, and I kept as far away from the fire as I could.

It wasn't the best night for my thoughts, I thought back to before dad had left. He and all the men had last seen me when I was blind and helpless, what would they do if they saw me now? I bet they'd send me back. Probably stop me from doing stuff on my own. When dad had left I couldn't even dress myself, so what would he think of me flying, quite literally blindly? On second thought I didn't want to see dad. I had just finished convincing, Katara, and Sokka that I wasn't helpless. That took years of work, so I struggled to understand what dad would think.

He'd treat me like I was a porcelain doll, keep me inside so that, "I'd be safe" and that this, "was for my own safety". I didn't want to see dad, or any of the tribesmen. I hadn't realized it at the time, but they were really sexist.

Sokka played warrior, while Katara and I were forced to take on the role of the caretakers. It annoyed me to no bounds.

He'd probably yell at me, and we'd argue. I didn't want that. If anything, I wanted the same respect a Sokka got. I was just as much a warrior as he was.

I wasn't going to let them keep me on a shelf to collect dust. I was going to work harder than all of them combined! I wasn't a helpless, blind, little girl! I could see be better than anyone. If anything, they were the blind ones..
