Lyra's POV
As relaxing as it was to meditate, I was beginning to find it difficult to ignore my clawing stomach.
The fish was done so I washed my hands and carefully slid it off the homemade spit, and onto a piece of stripped and cleaned bark as a replacement plate. I replaced it with a rainbow perch which I de-scaled priorly. I of course sprinkled some lemon tyme and some rock salt on both the outside and inside of the fish and placed it on the spit using the fish's spine like a guide.
The cooked fish continued to steam on the bark plate as I carefully picked at the tender meat with my chopsticks and fingers.
I caught a piece in my chopsticks and went to take an eager bite when...
I bit into nothing. The piece of fish had fallen from my chopsticks. I huffed in irritation as the hangriness took hold. I dropped the impromptu chopsticks, and just dug in with my fingers. While it wasn't the most ladylike way of eating it was the easiest. I tried to keep my manners most of the time but with fish, and other delicate foods it was either a spoon or my hands, and I didn't have a spoon. I also didn't want to go out of my way to make a spoon from wood as my fish will have gone cold or more than likely been stolen, and a spoon of ice would just make the fish cold and melt from the heat.
So that left my hands. Personally, I preferred eating with my hands unless it was something like soup, kinda obvious reason there.
I chose to eat away from the group, near the deeper part of the river where the clothes were hanging. It was nice to eat on my own for once.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the GAang. But they were always using actual utensils, whereas I used my hands. It got kinda awkward, especially when my hands got covered in stuff or I got food on my clothes. I wasn't very good at navigating that stuff.
It's why I usually made breakfast, so that I could eat without embarrassment. I'm a messy eater, I will admit it, but I'm working on it.
The fish tasted good, very tender and delicate. The river was also very peaceful, Asura loved diving in to grab fish.
She ate them whole, but much like her fully feathered ancestors she too choked up balls of bones and fur. It was quite the experience.
Eventually I did return and found everyone eating. Aang complimented my cooking and everyone followed. Jeong Jeong admitted to charring his fish a bit, but I didn't mind. Sokka was in the process of trying to mimic my process on another fish, as he had said,
"I am a growing warrior!"
So I was kind enough to show him. This was his second fish but he did share a large one with Katara, so I didn't comment.
No one talked and Asura offered Momo a fish almost two thirds his size.
As soon as I finished breakfast I let Katara take over for lunch.
I wanted to do some waterbending.
"Hey, Lyra!" Katara called as I entered the shallow ankle deep water.
"Hmm?" I hummed in question.
"Can you make dinner tonight? I don't trust Sokka. If you do, I can take whatever chores you have left?" She offered.
"Sure!" I agreed, "I was actually going to make dinner anyways but that works for me, can you take over with the laundry, and collect some wild fruits and vegetables?" I offered.
Katara nodded in an instant,
"That's fair, I'll let you reorganize the saddle, I'd much rather you not get mad at me for rearranging the stuff" she laughed.
I laughed remembering the first and only time she did that,
"Hey, Katara can you rearrange the saddle? Sokka lost his boomerang, please don't mess with mine though."
It was a fairly simple request, but when I returned from dinner, in search of some sea salt I couldn't find it anywhere.
I was slightly upset, but it wasn't bad enough to warrant any crazy reactions.
But those feelings had passed, I was greeted with something better as I wrapped up what remained. Katara had taken care of most of the chores, and Sokka had caught enough fish to make skewers for everyone from both lunch and dinner.
So now, I could relax.
I decided to practice my waterbending, it seemed like the right thing to do at the moment.
Aang and Jeong Jeong we're on their way to the top of the mountain and lunch came and went.
Jeong Jeong returned to meditate in his tent.
Soon dinner rolled around and I had begun to better understand my waterbending and managed to strengthen the bow and arrow to were it bent without snapping.
It was nice to not make dinner; Sokka made no objections.
The soup Katara made was delicious, I taught her well.
Aang eventually made his way down the mountain, impatient as ever. Katara and Sokka had gone elsewhere to bathe, and get into a now, clean pair of clothes.
It was maybe a minute later when Aang exited the tent, a bit red on the edges.
He resumed his place on the rock and sat in a meditative pose.
Eventually Jeong Jeong did exit the tent with a worn, thin lipped frown.
"I thought about what you said" Aang began, "I promise I'll be more patient."
Jeong Jeong's jaw locked with an expecting face as he began,
"We're going to work with fire now" Jeong Jeong stated.
Aang's calm composure burst as he celebrated, he quickly recomposed himself and bowed,
"Let us begin.."
