Capri
Two weeks ago.
My stomach grumbles, it has been a while since my last meal. I look up at the wall clock and saw that it is already eleven in the morning. I had pulled an all nighter again but my mind is still a bit hyper. I could try sleeping but I have an important appointment today. Well, not really an appointment but an important meeting of sorts.
Every Friday for the last five years, Lauren and I had met up at a local cafe for lunch. It used to be something that Lauren would do with her father, but ever since his passing, we decided to honor that tradition together.
Lauren won't be able to make it today though. It will just be me. But that's okay. I didn't mind upholding the tradition for Lauren. I know the relationship Lauren had with her father. He was a good man. And he was a very good friend even to me despite the fact that I am a stranger to both of them.
A good man is hard to find and Daniel Potter was definitely one. He is the type to always spare a change for anyone who needs it. A typical good guy, you know. Sweet and caring father, so sweet that I sometimes wished he was my own father.
Whenever I had that lunch date with Lauren, Lauren would regale me with stories about the good man. Like his work with the homeless and his contribution to the orphanage. In fact, that was how I first met him, at the orphanage. The place where my stories began.
I grab a clean towel and head to the bathroom. I stink of work sweat, a hot shower would be good before I head out for my lunch date.
The cafe was just a small family owned cafe. The owner used to be good friends of the Potters but like Mr. Potter, they too had moved on. It is now run by a new owner. Over the years, the food has been slightly different but still good. The decor, is newer, fresher, and more modern, but still appeals to the family oriented clientele.
I head straight to my usual booth, not waiting for a waitress to show me to my seat. I took out my phone and fiddled with it while I waited for someone to serve me.
A buff looking waiter approached my table, holding a notepad and pen.
"Hey, Car-" I stopped short after seeing the waiter. "You're not Carla" a hint of surprise in my voice.
"Sorry, Carla's sick today. I'm filling in. My name's Dave."
I cocks my head to the side. He doesn't look familiar at all. Is he new, I wondered.
"Do you know when she'll be back?"
"Maybe in a few days. I think it's just a cold." He flashed me an overly friendly fake smile.
"Fine, I'll just have fish and chips and a glass of Ice lemon tea. Thanks"
He nod politely and left and I went back to my phone.
After a while, I slowly look up. Something was off today. I can feel it. The place feels different.
What could it be, I wondered. The cafe only had one other table occupied. A group of three guys was there, chatting while they wait for their order. An unknown waiter is at the till.
