Lorenzo
I slump into the chair in front of my father. My anger had been replaced with the feeling of disheartened and discouragement. In short, I felt weak. I couldn't even protect her properly, how am I going to find her? I just got her back and now she's gone again.
A reassuring hand patted my back and like before, a surge of renewed energy coursed through me, making me feel slightly hopeful. I looked up and saw my father standing beside me. His face filled with pain and worry.
"I will tell you what I was planning to talk to Capri. But I'm not sure it will help you find her," he said. While his tone sounds comforting, his words didn't give me much confidence.
I sigh deeply. "Right now, I'll take just about anything. I need to find her padre."
He nodded, then walk back behind his desk. He opened a drawer and hand me a photo. It looks old like it was taken some twenty years ago. There are four people in the photo, three males and one female. At first glance, they look related, and I can see the resemblance.
"Who are these people?" I ask him.
"When I first met Capri, I didn't agree to help her because I thought she would benefit us. I agreed because she reminded me of someone."
My head is filled with questions. Mainly, who did she remind him of?
"Do you know about the Romanos? They were a mafia family based not far from here." I looked at him, clueless. The name doesn't ring a bell. "Well, I don't expect you to know them. It was before your time. That photo is probably the last surviving photo of that family." I looked at it again. Why is this photo important?
I scan the photo trying to see anything that pops up from that small piece of paper. Then it did, and my eyes widened in surprise.
"Yes, the resemblance is uncanny. I know." He confirmed what I just realized.
"Capri looks exactly like the lady in this photo," I said to myself. "Who is she?"
"Her name is Sofia Romano. I don't know her very well. I'm more acquainted with her brothers. We were somewhat close considering our families are practically neighbors." He took a deep breath. I can tell what's coming is something that is hard for him to say out loud.
"Some twenty years ago, The Romano went to war with another mafia family. The result was total annihilation. They were a small group and defeat was inevitable. So, they had asked me for help but I arrived too late. To this day I regret not sending help when they needed it. That's why I decided to help Capri. She reminded me of them. She might not be related to the Romanos but in some way, I hope whatever protection we gave her would absolve me of what happened all those years ago."
I let his words sink in. This is truly unexpected. But, wait, this wasn't what he said earlier. Did he outright lie to my face?
"Then, what was that bullshit you were talking about her being powerful and irreplaceable and wanting her to stay-"
