The wind chortled viciously.
With every calm step, a woman led her child through the maze like forest, it seemed to go on forever, and her nerves were at its peak, feeling as though the anxiety would burst out of her skin.
Every breath was horrifying, imagining a human being come leaping out of the bushes near by, capturing them both, making this mission of her own pointless.
"Mommy?"
"Shush, shush child, we're almost there."
Gently, she gave her son a reassuring smile. It was wobbly, and unbelievable, but the boy would not utter another sound, afraid of the dangers that awaited if he spoke too loud.
The boy was tripping over his own feet as his mother picked up the pace, seeing as he was not nearly four, but still, he said no words in complaint, his mothers tension seeping through his veins.
Fortunately, the woman picked her son up, either because she noticed the stumbling or felt that he was safer if she held him.
The path seemed never ending, and with his mothers new found embrace, he cradled his head into her shoulder, shuddering from the dark dusk of wind.
The woman wrapped her tattered cloak around her son, turning a corner quickly and peeking behind her. The darkness of her coat and the tree kept them both hidden. Hidden from the men who marched in, many close behind.
Their torches lit up the forest with an unsettling glow. One that screamed evil, their fires red and hot with anger.
Whilst taking a step forward, a twig had snapped, the woman gasping and concealing themselves from the mens view. Muttering stupidly at herself as the knight grew closer.
"I know you're there."
"Come out little one, and I won't hurt your mommy."
The woman grapsed her sons head, knitting her lips closed as she frantically peered around the tops of the trees. What should I do?
The little boy peered out from under the cloak, hearing the soldier's footsteps nearing them both. Then he turned his attention to some trees rather far away.
He stared at them intently.
As if pleading with them through his mind.
Asking, for help.
Suddenly, the bushes to those trees shook, causing the woman to snap her attention over towards the sound.
The men all gazed to where the noise lay.
"Over there!"
With stamping feet, and horses neighing, they rushed over, as well as the man who grew ever so close to them both, losing interest on whatever he thought would be there.
As hurriedly as they left, the woman rushed into the other direction, panting and avoiding any noise creation.
The boy saw the men gradually disappear from sight in the distance, clutching onto his mother in worry.
It felt like days before they came to a hault, his mothers running ceasing as she only studied her surroundings, waiting.
Where were they?
In an instance, two men and one woman came into view.
One was severely old, but with the kindest face man would ever see, in her hand she held a wooden staff, whether it was for balance or shown leadership, she would not know.
