Chapter 6

“I knew I’d find you here.” A deep voice said from behind me. I smiled looking to see who it was. It faltered as I recognised the person. It was Mr. Arley.

“How did you know I was here?” I asked hiding the book about the History of Mates I was reading. You see, I was trying to find out whether this has happened to someone else and if not, how could I tell which was one my mate? I was about to before I was rudely interrupted. I looked up to see his confused face.

“I don’t actually know...” he muttered as his eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “Why am I here?” He asked nervously. “I’m just going to go now... Okay, bye.” He rushed and turned.

“WAIT!” I yelled, earning me shushes from the librarian and everyone else in the library. “Mr. Arley, are you single?” I asked uneasily. A smirk grew on his face. “You know what? Don’t worry about it forget. Forget that I even asked.” I said and picked up my bag and rushed out of the library. He pursued me.

“Okay, I don’t know why I am telling you this, actually I don’t know why I am telling you most of this but, for your information I am single.” He told me whilst still following. “But it’s not like you care, you already have the human.” He spat. I narrowed my eyes at him.

“Don’t talk about him like that!” I shouted at him. “He’s not even fully human.” I retorted.

“Oh really?” he leered. “What is he? Obviously, you have a blocked nose. You can smell the human on him.” He laughed bitterly. “You’re even more naive than I thought-”

“What do you mean naive? Why do you think I’m naive? That is no way to speak to a Beta and-” I paused at my slip-up. Hopefully he didn’t notice. Please tell me he didn’t notice. We were a few paces from the lunch hall.

“Nothing; forget what I said. You know, you are so over-dramatic. I don’t know why I thought that maybe, just maybe, you could be my-” His eyes widened as he realised he was thinking out loud. I gulped. Was he going to say what I think he was about to say? We continued to walk the last steps in silence, over thinking our slip-ups and dispersed without giving each other a second glance.

I scanned the room looking for Brent even though I didn’t have to I could smell them from a mile away. I saw him and his sisters sitting with Alison and Lucas. There was also a guy with them and as I got closer I realised it was Jeremy, Why was he there? Shouldn’t he be sitting at the centre table with all the other jocks?

I gave him a weird look but took my seat. He was smiling stupidly at one of Brent’s sisters and then Alison was glaring at them intensely. There is obviously something going on there. I grinned at Brent when I caught his eye and he gave me a small sad smile.

What’s wrong? I tried sending to him but he blocked me. I crumpled my face in frustration. What is the matter? He didn’t block this one but he just didn’t reply. Jerk. “Fine, if no one is going to talk to me, I guess I’m going.” Everyone on the table looked at me shocked apart from Brent. I picked up my bag and stomped away from the table.

Melissa, wait. I’m sorry. I didn’t reply to him even though he can read my thoughts.

Read this, jerk. Screw you. I gave him a glare over my shoulder and stored out of the lunch hall. I dropped my bag at my locker and went running into the woods. I continued running, knowing I didn’t have a spare change of clothes anywhere and I wasn’t one to do the whole nudist thing, fighting my wolf to stay down.

My run came to a sudden halt when I heard voices. “I can’t do this any longer.” I recognised that voice; it was Mr. Arley!

“What do you mean, you can’t do this anymore?” A shrill voice said. It was obviously a woman.  I bet it’s some blond bimbo with massive boobs. Sure enough, when I peeped out it was one.

“This wasn’t anything serious now, was it Sarah? You only did it to get back at your dad; the Alpha. You know how he felt about Rogue wolves. I should have done this long before I came here. I’m trying to start a new life. I’m trying to get away from you.” He stressed. So, he lied. Technically, he wasn’t single but he wasn’t in a relationship either.

“But...but! Ben please! Don’t do this!” She said, draping her arms around him and suddenly my wolf kicked in. It was no longer painful to change, but I still felt the bones rearranging. Then I shifted into my wolf and I pounced on her. I don’t know why but maybe it was because of how angry I was that Brent was ignoring me and this was the last straw.

She let out a loud shriek before changing from under me. Her coat was white but it was an icky white like puke. White is usually a colour of innocence but there was nothing innocent about this coat of fur; it was almost evil. I heard a gasp from Mr. Arley in the distance as I clawed constantly at her face. She screamed as I continued to gouge her eyes out but remained below me as she wasn’t as strong as I. Her energy must have disappeared as she changed back to her human still underneath me. She wasn’t breathing.

“What have you done?” Mr. Arley hissed. My wolf couldn’t care less; my human was beginning to take over again. I looked at him perpetually. I don’t know why I did that. I think I just killed her. “Go.” He whispered. “Just leave, before they come.” I didn’t want to but I followed his orders. I ran without looking back hearing a load of breaking branches and footsteps off in the distance.

I galloped across the Gym Field and made my way into the Girls’ Changing Room. Once there, I changed. I never realised what a play on words that was before. We actually were allowed to shift into wolves in the Changing Rooms. No- I can’t think of that nonsense. This is neither the time nor place. I just killed a person and left Mr. Arley by himself at the scene of the crime.
