Chapter Nineteen

Ben’s POV

I got into my car and put my keys in the ignition ready to go over to pack #3. I knew it wouldn’t be easy to leave but I also knew that it had to be done. I drove out of the driveway of the apartment complex I live in and began to drive out of this pack’s territory. As soon as I was about to drive pass the end of the border and barren land between pack #3 and pack #2, my phone began buzzing. I glanced at it and saw it was a text from Melissa and looked back to the road.

Melissa.

I did a double take of my phone and pulled over. I took out my phone and stood in the waste land that I had to get through. It was almost sun set so the sky was purple and twinkling making the desert look like it was a part of a movie. It must be easy for people in movies. Having a bunch of writer’s writing your every move, thoughts of the characters around you and having a happily ever after. Not everyone has a happily ever after and I felt that I would never have a happily ever after.

I looked down at the text she sent.

I need you.

My heart skipped a beat looking down at the phone. Buzzing again, my phone made my heart flutter. I looked over my phone again and it was another text by her.

NOW.

That was what my wolf needed for me to form and take me galloping over the wilderness.  Before I knew it, my wolf stood in front of her house panting from the dramatic speed I was going at to get to her. I made out Melissa watching me through the window with an unreadable expression. Without my wolf heightened senses, I couldn’t have noticed the nervous breath she took in before giving me a nod of acknowledgement.

Knowing that I didn’t have any clothes she brought out a T-shirt and a pair of loose fitting jogging bottoms. As she stepped out on the porch, she flung them on the floor before walking away from me, expecting me to follow- which I did after putting on the clothes she had given me; probably belonging to her father or Jeremy.

She stopped when we got to the front of the school. She turned around to face me and I stared at her confused but she still had that unreadable expression on her face.

“I’m so sorry.” She whispered to me and then looked at me with a stern expression. “I can’t accept you being my mate.” She told me. I gave a bewildered expression.

“What do you mean you can’t accept being my mate?” I spat. “That’s ridiculous! I’ve already marked you! Don’t be stupid!” How can she not accept it? It’s done.

“I’m rejecting the mark.” She said curtly.

“That’s bull.” I spewed out. “You can’t do that at all.” I was shaking with anger. I wasn’t angry at her but I was angry at what she was saying to me.

“It can’t be this way.” She took a few steps away, turning from me. I could feel the rejection taking place and it was wounding me badly.

“No!” I reached out for her hand and spun her around. “Melissa, why are you doing this?!” I searched for a hint of why she was doing this but there was nothing. “Just come back.”

“It would never work out, Ben.” She chastised herself. “I mean, Mr. Arley. I’m the student and you’re the teacher. You’re wrong.” And then she murmured those words to finalise the rejection. “You’re not my mate.” She looked down at the ground and a few tear drops fell on my bare feet. It slowly began to rain and I glanced up at the sky before looking back at her.

“Melissa, listen to me.” I said, still having a hold on her wrist. I could feel the temperature drop drastically. The rain grew heavier and they were turning into hail stones. I was still shaking; not sure whether it was because of the weather or because the pain this was causing me.

She was also cold; we were both only in T-shirts. I could tell that she didn’t care about the teacher either. “I don’t care that you’re my student and I’m your teacher. All I care about is us.” I gestured my free hand between us. She was shaking her head. “I don’t know if this is wrong but I do know that you ARE my mate and I can’t live without you if I tried.”

She was still shaking her head but only more vigorously. She averted her gaze elsewhere. She stared at the sky, her tears evident now. She clutched her chest. “Please, Melissa, don’t do this.” I pleaded. Tears began trailing down my face. She pushed me away with full force, pulling her arm out of my grip. I put my hands around my waist; still wanting to touch her.

“No!” She declared; her voice strong now. “This would never work. And it’s not only the fact that you’re my teacher but it’s the fact that,” She held eye contact with me now, it felt like hours. “the fact that you’re not my mate.” She pried my hands off her and spun away from me, running as fast she could.

I fell to my knees, not expecting the pain in my chest to wound me so badly. “Melissa!” I yelled. I needed her. This was the true meaning to heart break and it hurt so badly. “Melissa, come back!” I screamed in anguish. “ARRRGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!”

A devilish laugh hovered over me. I stared at him whilst I was going through the pain he was enjoying. Mr. Black. He had a small girl in his arms that looked like, no it was, it was Abbie.

A single gunshot rung through the dreary day. Mr. Black’s laughing ceased and he fell to his knees. My gut wrenching pain was almost bearable.  He clung to his chest and let Abbie free. She ran towards me and I stood up ready to pick her up.

I looked to where the gunshot came from; it was from Sarah.
