I step in the spa and Ikki turns his head, looking at me

I step in the spa and Ikki turns his head, looking at me.

"Hey, where did you end up going last night? I called your home address and your friend answered for you. She told me that you were doing something," Ikki asks me.

"I was hanging out with a friend." I am not going to say much about hanging with Bon. It'll bother them. "We went out for some ramen."

"It is funny how you know Mahiru, but you don't know who Maya is."

"Maya is a person I do not get to see much of due to our jobs keeping us a part. Mahiru has told me all about her."

"That's interesting," he responds. "You two would like each other if you were to meet." I bet we would, Ikki, since we are the same person.

It isn't like I am trying to keep them both in the dark to hurt them, but simply it is because this is what I have to do. Everything is for HIC and the greater good of humanity. If these two are trouble, I will have to stop them. That is what I need to do and it sucks that I have to hurt them in the process. I will make it is tolerable as possible for them.

Daiji enters the room, his eyes going to me immediately. "You're here?" he asks me.

"Hello, Daiji," I say, greeting him.

He smiles warmly at me. "How are you doing, Claire?" he asks softly.

"I'm doing pretty well today. How are you?"

"I am doing pretty well as well. I was actually hoping to bump into you. I wanted to invite you out with me," Daiji says, being direct with what he wants to do today.

"You want to hang out with me?" I blink.

Daiji is asking me to hang out at this time? I wonder what is going on with him. He isn't usually this direct with me about wanting to hang out at the exact time he sees me. Maybe it is because he needs a friend to help him with something.

"Yeah, I do," he says as his eyes go to Ikki. "I hope you don't mind me doing so. I was wanting to show her around."

"You can show her around. I'll just have to show her around somewhere else some other time," Ikki responds, giving Daiji permission to take me out before he can get a chance.

Is this how friends interact with each other? They do this kind of thing to hang out with someone. I am quite interested in learning about how these kinds of things work. Whenever I'm Maya, I have to pretend I understand it. As my real self, I can show that it confuses me.

"I have a bike we can go into town with," I state. "I can take us wherever you want me to go to with you, Daiji."

Daiji's eyes return to me as he smiles wider. "Great. Let me finish getting ready and we can head on out."

I nod. "Very well."

"Have fun," Ikki says, his tone of voice sounding a bit bittersweet. I wonder why that is.

Oh well. Not my problem at this time. It is time to hang out with Daiji and keep doing my job.

~.~

I turn on the road as Daiji holds onto my waist, letting me do my thing on my bike. Actually, it's a motorcycle. And yes, I can legally drive in Japan without any issues. It is thanks to HIC that I can do so.

We've been doing all kinds of things today. We went out to eat and chatted about all kinds of things. Of course, I kept it quite vague for my past experiences as I do not need for him to know anything about HIC. If he finds out, he'll know what I'm up to and I can't have that.

BANG! The sound of something bouncing off my bike hits my ears.

I look into my mirror and see someone on a bike behind me, a gun in their hand. That's interesting. Someone is here to prevent me from doing my job. I know they're not here for Daiji because that bullet was close to hitting me. Good thing my bike is resistant to that kind of thing. It is special made for such situations.

The person fires again and I feel my arm start burning.

"Claire, what's going on?" Daiji asks, finally speaking up.

"Hold on," I order as I stop my bike suddenly, turning it so that the other driver is forced to stop suddenly.

The other biker tries to stop and turns sharply, crashing onto the ground. Daiji lets go of me and I hop off the bike as quickly as possible. I reach into my pocket and pull out my weapon and fire it at them, not hesitating to eliminate them.

"Daiji, are you alright?" I ask, lowering my weapon as my eyes stare at the body on the ground. "I have eliminated the threat."

"You have a gun?"

"That is correct. Now answer my question."

"Yes, I'm alright. What about you?" he asks. "Someone just tried to murder us."

"No, they were not here for you at all. They were here for me because of an investigation I'm doing. I am sorry, but I cannot give you the details of said investigation," I say, my eyes scanning the area. It seems that I'm being tested now for my loyalty to HIC.

"An investigation?" Daiji asks, sounding surprised. "Just what is your job?"

"You do not need to concern yourself with it. It has nothing to do with you." I cannot tell him about HIC. "The investigation is classified anyways."

"But they nearly killed us!" he exclaims. "Can't you just let me in on it?"

I shake my head. "They had zero interest in you. Please let me deal with the aftermath of this. I will have someone from my squad come and clean the scene." Mahiru is the one person I can trust with this.

"You are hurt."

"I will be fine. I've been harmed worse than this before." I look around. "Daiji, how are you overall?"

"I'm fine unlike you."

I look down at my arm. "It is a minor wound. Do not worry too much about it," I say, my eyes returning to him. "I will be fine."

"Let me patch it up," he offers. "There's a shop nearby. I can buy what we need and then you can report it to whoever you report to. You do know you can trust me, right? Claire, I'm your friend."

I nod my head. "I am aware that you are, but I am not ready to talk about such things without the clearance to. Once I have the clearance to speak about what my job wants me to do here, I will let you know. I do trust you, Daiji."

Daiji smiles. "At least you do."

I don't know what it is, but I do trust him. I dislike having to lie to him when he's so kind to me, but it is what I have to do. He would toss me to the side if he found out what I'm hiding. Sometimes it is best to keep someone's eyes covered to the truth. He's so kind and sensitive that it'll hurt him so bad if he knew.

"I will pay for it," I say. "Here, let me give-"

"No, let me handle it. I want to help you." Daiji turns away from me. "You should report what happened in the meantime."

"Yes, a dead body isn't a good thing," I say, agreeing with his words. "That person was a hitman, so I did what I needed."

"You won't get in trouble?"

"It happens quite often in my work."

"So, this isn't the first time?"

I shake my head. "And it won't be the last."

"Well, you should definitely try being more careful. At least now I know what I can do when we're together. I will help you stay safe and watch out for such people from now on. I won't let you get hurt." He turns back to me.

"Thank you."

He smiles again and heads towards the shop after turning back away. If only he could know the truth. Oh, Daiji, what am I going to do with you?
