Mystic Falls Virginia, 1864

"Nancy, the Salvatore boys and Miss Pierce are here!" Mrs Lockwood called up the stairs of her foyer to her adopted daughter as she smiled at the three new comers in the entrance hall in a 'sorry to make you wait', sort of way.

Stefan smiled it off politely while Damon seemed impassive and Katherine, stonily silent.

"Coming mother!" The girl yelled back the sound of rushing, heeled boots down the stairs echoing through the marble and wooden walkway between the drawing room and the lounge.

"Are you sure you three don't want to stay for a spot of tea before you head to the fair?" The mother asked kindly but the three shuck their heads politely declining.

"It's alright." Damon replied, speaking for the first time since the three had gotten off of their carriage that afternoon. "I do with George would go with you, although....nothing keeps that boy away from practicing with his musket these days.....Lord knows I dread the day he becomes of age to enlist....you made the right choice coming home Damon.....war is no place for a young man like yourself."

"Tell that to our father." Damon muttered bitterly, receiving a sympathetic look from the older woman before the sound of her daughter's voice rang through the entrance hall, now having reached them.

"You could have waited in the carriage, saved mother the job of inviting you all in for a drink." Nancy spoke with a smile to her friends. "Nonsense dear, it's chilly outside.....now where is your shawl!" Mrs Lockwood looked her adoptive daughter up and down deploringly.

"Oh mother, don't be such a worry-body." She sighed as she made eye contact with Stefan over his brother's shoulder. "Are you all ready to go?"

"Well I for one would actually like a tea now, that would be lovely Mrs-."
"Not happening, come along boys!" Nancy then jumped down the last step, passed her mother and caught both brother's arms as she dragged them towards the door, their legs getting caught in the slight skirt of her dress.

All while Katherine watched on in a silent, white-hot rage.

"Have fun! And be safe!" Her adoptive mother called, but it fell upon deaf ears. "Untold Dangers lurk in the shadows of Mystic Falls."

And little did the mother-figure know. She was right.

Damon's POV

I had never understood how everyone else did this. How they came back after loosing their humanity and pretended like everything was all right with the world. How they comped with their guilt with strength and integrity while I, instead of trying to hide....was walking down Main Street dazed and empty.

Granted most of the others I'm my life disappeared for days, weeks or months to silently plunge into their guilt but I could never quite break the surface of my own.

Stefan wallowed, Caroline over corrected, Elena made amends and pretended she was fine and Nancy......well Nancy had never switched it off- at least not that I had seen. But me, I did what I do best. I hid it all.

So that evening, after being freed from my emotionless captivity by none other then Katherine Pierce who reignited my hatred for herself and brought me back, I spent hours wondering the town I'd come to call 'home'.

Like the others I'd fully acclimatised and I had settled into the space, well at least I had until Elena left me. Again.

But even when she left me and I thought about giving up on everything and running away again, one thing was always there tugging me back.

Nancy.

The thought of leaving her again, to not be at least near her.

After Elena left me for good to run off and live a normal human life with Jeremy by her side, I had given up on ever truly loving again. But the abandonment hadn't taken away the one thing Elena always resented me for, my love for Nancy and my devotion to choosing my brother over any girl ever again.

Seeing Nancy and Stefan so close, just as I had been with her when we were human and in our younger vampire years, was heart wrenching. So that night when I was busy stumbling down Main Street, I passed by the old Mechanics shop beside Archie's, long closed, therapist office.

Glancing to my right, was when I saw it. My brother and my ex-best friend and ex-lover were stood, close together laughing over a nearly-finished motor bike. Bright smiles on their careless faces and warm auras of contentment radiating off of them.

This was what I'd done. I'd pushed them both away and in doing so I'd lost them to each other.

I was no longer Stefan's big brother, his hero and protector like I was when we were boys- and as when we were grown I was no longer his confidant, romantic rival or his ride or die, only living family. He had Nancy to fill the void of an older sibling figure and a ride or die because he had Caroline who loved him and Nancy who would always be there to protect that love for them.

While Nancy, always in need of someone to protect, took her care for me and replaced it for care for my brother. She loved him as her own, even given their history and resigned herself to caring for him as she had I.

Nancy's POV

As I walked home that night I looked up at the vast expanse of space stretching out into the cosmos, blanketing the sky in a sea of stars. Thinking of my missing papa and what had been troubling him other then the obvious guilt he had shared with David.

I imagined he was with me in that moment, gazing up at the same stars and thinking of me as he did. I imagined that we were talking as we used to and he was telling me his worries. And then I got home and one thing lay on my kitchen table.

A handwritten note on a piece of old beach parchment. Pirate's map material.

And it simply read;

Little Star,
I never thought I'd be able to live another the day i was handed you. But I've fallen for another woman who has captured my heart and I just needed you to know. I plan to ask Emma to marry me and I apologise for not telling you. But I just didn't know how. Because it was too important to me to do this with out. I love Emma and I know this will hurt you, that I haven't asked how you feel. But I know you, and I know you'll be happy for me. I love you Little Star.

And I always Will.

But before I can Marry Emma, there is one last thing I must do.

- Your father, always xx

"I thought you'd be home soon." Spoke a voice from my dark kitchen doorway making me jump.

"And I've been waiting for this for a while."

And that's when I realised who it was.

Katherine.
