Flashback 1864
"Damon!" Katherine Pierce walked up behind the elder of the two Salvatore brothers one evening in the early summer as he watched his younger brother on the ballroom floor twirling their long-time friend Nancy Lockwood.

Nancy's adoptive brother George was stood a few tables away with his own father and Damon's who were chatting away about business. The two stern men watched closely as the nineteen and twenty-five year-olds danced together on the ballroom floor- laughing and talking together in hushed whispers as Stefan practiced twirling the girl out and back in to his chest.

Without all of his rigorous practice with Nancy, Stefan would be a terrible dancer but the girl didn't seem fazed as the boy stepped on her toes or span her in a much too dizzying fashion. She simply enjoyed teaching her friend and surrogate 'brother'.

George being her actual 'brother' by way of adoption was much colder then the Salvatore while she was definitely closer with Stefan's elder brother, she still held the younger of the two close to her heart.

As he watched them dance Damon had began to feel an odd weaning feeling like his brother had taken something of his for the evening- but he pushed this away when the Pierce woman approached him.

Katherine despised Nancy. She hated how the girl fawned over and loved the brothers so deeply, she hated how the girl was beautiful effortlessly and how, despite his own obliviousness, the girl was the only thing standing between herself and the full affection of Damon Salvatore.

For months, Katherine had been stringing both brothers along like puppets on taught strings- but every time Katherine tied a new not around the brothers- Nancy Lockwood visited like a pair of scissors and cut away all her work.

The manipulation only served Katherine's purpose to have both brothers with Nancy out of the picture but she knew simply killing the girl wouldn't help her.

Loosing Nancy would ruin the brothers. Stefan would loose his mother-figure, his protector, his guidance and his only healthy source of female affection. While Damon would be even worse off- he would loose his best-friend, his confidant, his stability, his conscience and, unbeknownst to him, the love of his life- his soulmate.

Katherine despised the girl.

She tapped the older brother's shoulder shapely and called out his name. "Escort me to the dance floor would you?" She asked with a smirk when his face turned to her and visibly brightened.

"Off course." He mumbled taking her arm and guiding her to the floor. She placed her arms around his shoulders and his went to her waist as the song slowed and they noticed Stefan and Nancy step away to speak with their fathers.

"You seemed distracted." Katherine observed as he span her away and back expertly. Unlike his brother, Damon was a natural- but he too enjoyed practice with Nancy, maybe a little more then his brother ever would.

"I was just observing my brother's abysmal dancing." He mocked back and Katherine chuckled, but there was no humour or light to it. She was always dark.

"Not by Nancy?" She hummed with her piercing brown eyes hardest on his blues. "I....I, I um...."
"It's alright Damon.....I know you have eyes for her." She told him but he shuck his head. "For Nancy?! She's just my friend!" He defended but a break in his clearly-not puberty-stricken voice gave him away.

"You love her don't you?"
"What?"
"You love Nancy." She repeated and he gave her a look.

Did he? Love Nancy?

But his blind infatuation and devotion to the Pierce and the intoxicating competition with his brother for her hand was too much for him to admit his true feelings. He didn't love Katherine- no she was just a distraction.

He loved Nancy.

But he was too scared......scared she would never love him back.

So he hid it, and just like that night- he hid it for another 150 odd years.....

Present day

Until that day in 2014 (Ik it's 2017 in the show don't @ me.)

Damon was sitting in the Lockwood manor living room when the others returned that evening from a day of mournful drinking at the abandoned grill.

Enzo had returned to the boarding house while Alaric had left for Whitmore- but Caroline, Bonnie, Stefan and Matt came back to Tyler's old home to continue their evening.

They found the brooding-looking vampire on the couch a bottle of bourbon half drank on the table and a full tumbler glass nursed between his hands.

"She left." Stefan spoke bluntly to his brother, a certain level of rage bubbling just under t her surface of his words. "I know that thank you Stefan." The older of the two snapped back as the other vampire, the witch and the human in the room all stepped backwards into the kitchen to avoid the argument.

Following them in, was Valerie who was now seeking refuge with the brothers and their guests from Lily and Julian.

"Do you? Because I didn't we you when we were all saying goodbye to her.....you know, your best friend of one hundred and seventy years!" The younger snapped and Damon span around on his spot.

"You know what Stefan? You're right, I wasn't there.....why should I have been? So I could have made her leave quicker? I'm the reason she left Stefan! She hates me......I pushed her away so I don't think seeing me would have changed her mind!"

"What the hell did you do to her?" Stefan accused at his brother who gave a dark scowl at the question. "I told her she wasn't Elena.......and I've done worse Stefan........I used her, she loved us.....she was always there and we- I took her for granted." The Salvatore admitted for the first time in over one hundred years.

"And now she's gone.....and it's my fault........she never would have left, but she deserved better, better then me.......Elena's gone and now Nancy is too.......so yeah Stef.....it's my fault, I stole your girl and I pushed away your best friend and I didn't end up with either of them in the end......I guess I'm alone."

The depressing confession and display ended with Damon sitting on the sofa his bed between his hands and his shoulder shaking slightly. "She's gone." He sobbed and his brother didn't know what to say or do.

He's never seen his brother so broken. Not over Katherine, not over Elena and never did he think it would be over Nancy.

"She's gone."
