Driving out of Mystic Falls was a hard thing to do, walking away was hard. Knowing that they were leaving their town, their home in the hands of Damon's mother and her psycho 'children' was worse. But what made it almost unbearable was knowing that they had let everyone down.

Jo was dead, Elena was comatose, the townspeople were evicted, Tyler was driven away with grief for Liv, Matt had lost his whole graduating class, Jeremy would never see his sister again, Bonnie would never see her best friend, Alaric had lost his wife and unborn children all in one fall swoop, Damon had lost his epic love and Stefan was all alone in feeling like he had failed the town.

Nancy was drowning in an ocean of guilt, mixed with red hot anger and she was near breaking point. She had spent decades looking after the Salvatore brothers and seeing them both so hurt these past few days, especially the last few months had made her heart break. Watching both of them fall for Elena after what had happened with Katherine was hard enough but seeing Stefan rejected the way he was and Damon used the way he was, hurt her even more.

She could never admit it out loud but she loved Damon Salvatore. The reason she couldn't admit it? She didn't even know it herself. For years she had only ever allowed herself to be the best friend, the drinking buddy, the support system.

She was never selfish when it came to their friendship, always there as a shoulder to cry on and an ear to rant to. She was the only woman who had never turned her back on those boys, yet she stayed in the wings.

She knew Damon would never love her back. He only saw her as his friend, his lifeline maybe, but never anything more then platonic love.

She had loved him since they were 15, and she was the broken, lost and confused girl in a new world. She had spilled her heart to Damon, every fact about her life before landing in this strange world with out magic was locked away in a safe in his heart and she trusted him unwaveringly, but she knew the same faith and love would never be totally reciprocated.

Damon Salvatore loved Katherine Pierce.....or at least he had loved the idea of her......then he lived Elena Gilbert.

There was never any room for Nancy Jones.

That night they drove out of Mystic Falls and back towards Whitmore were they had been forced to stay while they watched their beloved home be taken by his mother and her band of freaks.

Just passing the welcome sign to the town, the slightly intoxicated Damon, decided to swerve slightly in his drunken haze and managed to violently blow a tire.

Nancy groaned as she sat up slowly assessing their surroundings, the car was stopped in the middle of the road facing the same direction but veered dramatically over both lanes, after spinning out and blowing the tire.

She had fell forward and smacked her face on the dashboard before the air bag deployed and despite being relatively unharmed, her head was dizzy, her vision obscured by a painful haze and her head trickling a small stream of thick claret blood. "Why the hell did I let you drive?" She snapped at the Salvatore in the drivers seat who was busy fumbling with the car door to get out and assess the damage. "Yeah yeah." He sarcastically snapped back at her.

She climbed out of her own side and moved around the car slowly in her delirious state, to look at the tire. Black ribbons of torn rubber lay around the gaping hole in the tire as little billows of smoke flared from the under-tread side of the tire.

"Great. Gotta spare?" She snapped at him and he gave her a look as if to say "in this car? Really?" And she groaned again. "I'll call Matt, he's closest."

She moved to retrieve her phone from her back pocket when he sighed rather dramatically; "What so the idiot can tow my car? Hell no, we'll walk to the next service station." He snapped at her.
