Chapter Three
Break ups will always be hard
On Thursday, I called Nathan and asked him to come over after school. When he arrived, we went and sat in the back garden and spoke. Nathan leaned in to kiss me. "No." I told him, putting my hand to his shoulder and stopping him.
"What's wrong?" He asked, a puzzled look taking over his face.
"I can't."
"You can't kiss me?"
"No, I can't do this."
"Huh?"
"Us. I can't do this. I mean, we're just not right for each other."
"Tell me you're not..." The rest of the words seemed to hang in the air for anybody to snatch up.
I sighed and said "I'm breaking up with you, Nat. Goodbye." I then kissed him on the cheek and went inside the house. He followed me in, like I knew he would. Tears were sliding down my cheeks as I walked up the stairs, trying to get away from him. When I got into my room, I sat on the floor and lent against my bed. Nat came in, stood in front of me and said "Why?"
I took a deep breath, looked up to him and said "I just can't."
"That's not good enough." I sighed. this guy would not take 'no' for an answer.
I stood up, looked him in the eye and said "Nathan, get out of my house."
"What?"
"Get out of my house, I never want to see you again. Ever." I then walked to the door, opened it and made a 'the door's here, don't let it hit you on the way out' motion with my arm. He looked at me and I just held his gaze, strong and rejecting. When he finally left, I shut the door, sunk to my knees and let out a heart breaking sob. The whole day I cried. I didn't eat, I didn't go downstairs I just cried. I cried for Nat.
"Mel, what is it? You've been crying for two days." Sal asked, walking into my room on Saturday evening.
"Nat." I muttered.
"What did he do?"
"We broke up."
"Why?" Sal said, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.
"I couldn't have him hurting when I...d...when I went. I had to give him the chance to hurt and be able to heal. Do you understand?"
"Yeah. I understand that you are the most selfless and kind person I've ever had the pleasure to know."
"Thanks." I whispered, leaning on her shoulder and crying. "I just didn't want him to grieve forever." I said, sniffling.
On Monday, I went back to school and saw Nat. I walked through the gates and saw his sad face as I walked by out of the corner of my eye. The day was slow and dull, nothing interesting happening. As I left school, I bumped into Nat's sister, Kelly. She looked at me and said "Can I talk to you?" I nodded and we headed towards the park.
In the park, Kelly said "How could you?"
"Huh?" I asked, slightly confused.
"How could you dump him? He loved you."
"We weren't right for each other." I said, telling her what I'd told Nat.
"No, you were being selfish. He loved you to bits. He'd always talk about you. So you go and you break up with him."
"I know, and I'm sorry."
"He would have died for you. He loved - no, loves - you. I hear him cry at night. He's not himself."
"I'm sorry, I've got to go." I said, walking in the direction of my home.
When I got in, I threw my bag on the floor and said "His sister thinks I'm a selfish bitch." I then went upstairs and sat in room. I pulled my long, brown, wavy hair, that hung down to the middle of my back, over my shoulder and pulled my fingers through it, hating it. Wanting to pull it out. I then walked downstairs, got the scissors from in he kitchen draw and went back upstairs. I went into the bathroom and stood in front of the mirror, that hung above the sink, grabbed my hair in a huge hunk and cut at it with the scissors so it sat just on my shoulders when I was done. I then threw the excess hair into the sink, along with the scissors, and went into my room and cried.
