Chapter Four
Appearance isn't everything
"Ummm, Mel, what did you do?" Sal asked, walking into my room. She saw that I was crying and came to comfort me. "Mel? What is it?"
"His sister thinks I'm a selfish bitch. Am I?" I said, my voice shaky.
"No. No, you aren't. Don't listen to her." Sal rubbed my back and said "Why your hair?"
"Guess I wanted a change."
"Do you want me to take you to the salon so they can sort it?"
"Please." I whispered.
When we got to the salon, I pulled the bobble from my hair and the hairdresser said "What happened?"
I looked at him and said "Stress and my ex"
"I get a lot of that."
"Tell me about it."
"So, what are we doing? Colour and cut?"
"Knock yourself out." I said, half smiling.
The hairdresser smiled and said "Whatever you say, darlin'." He then looked at my hair, running his fingers through it and messing about with it.
After talking with the hairdresser while he did my hair, he put some sweet smelling spray into my hair and declared that he was done. I looked in the mirror and said 'wow'. My hair looked amazing. It was blonde. My hair was blonde. The thing was, though, I liked it. It looked lovely blonde. My hair sat at the bottom of my neck and had lots of layers, making my hair curve into the shape of my face and curl lightly at the end. I had a side fringe that swooped from one side of my face across my forehead and sitting just below my eye brow. I loved it. He looked at me and said "What do you think?"
"What do I think?" I paused. "I think I love it." I said, smiling.
He smiled and said "I'm glad."
"Thank you."
"It's fine, love. But, hey, don't you be letting that ex of yours ruin your lovely hair. It's gorgeous and I want you to keep it that way, okay?"
I grinned. "Whatever you say, darlin'." I said, repeating his words.
He smiled at me and said "And don't go stealing my words."
I rolled my eyes and said "Guys." I then turned to him and said "But, yeah, thanks. I love it." He then took the gown off of me and smiled. I stood up and went over to Sal who was sat on one of the sofas, reading a magazine.
"Oh my God. You look beautiful." Sal said, hugging me.
I smiled and said "Thanks." After paying, we went home and ordered in a pizza.
As we watched the TV while eating our pizza, Sal said "I want us to go away. You know, like on a holiday."
I didn't look away from the TV as I said "Maybe." And then it was quiet as we finished our dinner.
That night, after I'd gone into my room, I climbed out of my window and sat on the roof of our toilet, that was situated outside of my bedroom. I sat there with a book and read for an hour. When Sal came in to say goodnight, she stuck her head out of the window and said "Mel, come on in. You're gonna' freeze. And you're not doing your back any good, slouching like that. Come on, I'll make you some hot chocolate. Yeah?" I slid the bookmark into my book, closed it and stood up. I climbed in the window and grabbed my PJs before going into the bathroom to change into them. I then washed my face and brushed my teeth. As I sat in bed, I pulled my laptop from under my bed and went onto the internet. I sat and looked at my Facebook page. My relationship status was still set to 'in a relationship with Nathan Burne' I quickly clicked on edit and changed it to 'single'. I felt tears stinging the back of my eyes. I blinked a few times and then started looking at my comments on my profile. One that caught my eye was one written by Nathan. He had tagged me in it. It said 'Nathan Burne misses Melissa Green :( ' I looked at it and sighed. If only I could write the same in reverse. If only I could tell you the truth. I turned off my laptop and slid it back under my bed. I then lay there, staring at the ceiling.
On Wednesday, I went to school and avoided everyone, barely answering teachers and staring into space. When I got a compliment about my hair, when someone said about how they liked it, I would just smile and walk away. At lunch time, I was sat against a tall Oak tree reading a book when Nat came and sat by me. I tried to ignore him but he put his hand on my thigh and said "I miss you, Mel."
I looked at him and whispered "I know, I saw your comment."
"Oh. So, how've you been?" Nat must've felt slightly awkward.
"Good. You?" I replied, still reading page seventy four.
"As good as can be. I like your hair, by the way."
"Thanks." I said, finding the conversation majorly awkward. "Ummm...I've go-"
"Just hear me out. I want to know why you broke up with me. Like, really."
"We just...weren't going anywhere. We weren't right, you know, for each other."
"You said that but I know that's not the real reason."
"Look, I've gotta' go now." I said, putting my book in my bag and standing up.
Nat stood up, caught my arm and said "Please. Just please tell me. The truth, I mean."
"That is the truth." I said, pulling my arm away.
"I know you, Mel, and I know that you're a crap liar. Whenever you lie, you always bite your lip and you don't even know that you're doing it." He pointed at me. "See, you're doing it now."
"So what if I am."
"You're lying."
"I'm not, I'm telling you the truth - I swear."
"Stop talking shit." I sighed and walked towards the school building. I had a killer headache.
As I walked towards the school, I heard Nat. He grabbed my arm and turned me around so that I was facing him. On the way, things started to blur and the ground came rushing towards me.
