Chapter Seven
Just friends
It was Monday and I was sat in English. I was getting awful abdomen pains and was trying to ignore them. As I sat clutching my stomach, Miss Edward said "Okay, class, discuss the first and last passage with the person next to you." I turned to my left and regretted swapping places with Mandy Smith at the beginning of the year. I'd swapped places with her so she could sit next to Charlie McCair - who she had a huge crush on - and I could sit next to Nat (we'd been going out for a month after hooking up during the summer).
I sat there and did nothing until Nat said "Mel, are you gonna' discuss this with me, or not?"
"Okay, you go first." I said, turning slightly towards Nat. As Nat spoke about the passages, I sat there in agony, clutching my stomach and biting my lip until I tasted blood.
"Mel? Mel, are you listening?" Nat asked. I ignored him and leant my head on the desk. "Mel, are you okay?" Nat asked, putting his hand on my shoulder.
"Do I look like I'm friggin' okay?" I muttered, barely lifting my head from the table.
"Is there anything I can do to help?"
"Kill me."
"I take that back."
"What is it that's putting you in pain?" Nat asked.
"I'm in agony." I said through gritted teeth.
"Why don't you go to the office?"
"I don't know."
"Come on, I'll take you."
"No, I'm fine, thanks."
"No arguing. If you're in that much pain, then you should go home."
"Whatever." I muttered.
Nat then went up to Miss Edwards' desk and spoke to her. She nodded and he came back and said "Come on." I pushed myself out of my chair and headed out of the class room.
When we got to the office, the office lady saw me and said "What is it, hun?"
"Abdomen pains." I said. "Can you call Sal?"
"Sure, just sit down there." I sat down and wrapped my arms around my stomach.
"How did you do that? She never lets people go home. And if she does, she usually goes on the full interrogation mode before she finally calls home." Nat asked.
"It doesn't matter." I muttered.
"Hun, Sal said she'll be here in about ten minutes. Okay?"
"'Kay, thanks." I smiled, weakly.
"So, I was wonderin' if you wanted to do something sometime?" Nat asked. He saw my expression and, hastily, added "Not like a date, just as friends. D'you know what I mean?"
"Mmm. Well, I am planning a camping slash drinking trip some time. You game?"
"Oh, cool. I'm in. Just tell me when and where."
"Well, it won't be for two or three weeks."
"Why?"
"Me and Sal are going to Sicily, on Sunday, for two weeks."
"Sicily? Italy, Sicily?"
"Mmm hmm." I said, wrapping my arms tighter around my stomach.
"Wow, sudden. When was this arranged?"
"Saturday - I think."
"Mmm. Well, can I expect a postcard?"
"Errr...no-owwwww!" My words merged into a moaning cry of pain after getting a really sharp stab of pain. I felt my eyes begin to water with the pain of my abdomen.
"Mel? Mel, can I help?" Nat asked.
"No." I whispered, leaning against him. He wrapped an arm around me and kept on telling me that it'd be okay.
When Sal came in and saw me and Nat like that, she was completely confused. I said 'goodbye' to Nat and then me and Sal got into the car. When we got home, Sal looked at me and said "What was going on between you two?"
"We were just talking. I invited him to my camping thing and told him about Italy and he was just looking after me while I waited for you." I told her, hugging a pillow from on the sofa.
'Oh' was all Sal said. I fell asleep on the sofa, thinking of Nat. The warmth of his skin. The tingle that I got from his touch. I missed him, I really did.
