Sydney Sage hadn't expected to be waken up in the middle of the night to find Magnus Bane and Adrian Ivashkov under her window. Well, she had dealt with surprises like these from them before, but it still didn't prepare her. She pondered what she would tell her father as they walked on the sidewalk leading out of her neighborhood. His hold on Sydney was very strong these days and he would undoubtedly notice her absence. Why did Sydney have to put herself through this mess?

She knew why. Magnus had helped her get out of the deal with Abe that had put her in trouble with her dad in the first place and she owed him. As much as it hurt her she wasn't someone to go back on a deal.

She wouldn't admit it, but there was another reason why she put herself through this. Even though she had to hang out with a vampire she wanted very badly to get out of that prison of a house. It had been three weeks and Sydney was reduced to a child under her father's gaze.

Once they were well out of her neighborhood, Sydney asked, "So what kind of demon are we looking for? I don't actually have to fight one right?" Sydney felt safe with Magnus, but knew his power only covered so much. She still didn't know why they had a dire need to kill a demon at two in the morning. Sydney was really just comforted with the fact that they had thought ahead enough to have someone clean up the remains... even if demons weren't the Alchemist specialty.

Magnus chuckled. "I would never put you through that, Miss Sage. I know better than that. It doesn't matter what demon we find as long as it is minor enough for us to contain. The reports from the nearest conclave say that there is an behemoth demon downtown that we will more than likely check out."

"Behemoth?" Adrian asked, "I thought that was extinct."

"Mammoth," Sydney corrected. "Isn't that the demon that can consume any object in its path? Are you sure that's something you guys can handle?!"

"Yes we can. It's not as bad as you're making it." Magnus assured her. Sydney frowned still not convinced. She moved to her next inquiry as they reached Salt Lake City's shopping district.

"Tell me again why you guys want to hunt a demon without the aid of a shadowhunter or a guardian?"

Adrian flashed her a smile. "Relax, Sage. Don't worry about it."

This just irritated Sydney even further. There was something about Adrian Ivashkov that alway put her on edge... She wondered how she ever thought he was cute, but immediately took it back as she looked at the glints of gold in his chesnut hair that were illuminated by the streetlamps. Urgh why was he so attractive?

"I am not putting myself in danger for you two and not knowing why!"

"Here we are," Magnus said ignoring her. They stopped in front of a restaurant with a red roof and matching outdoor chairs. The window was broken and the lights were off.

"Mestizo's Coffeehouse..." Adrian read. "You'd think that a demon that eats everything would be somewhere with actual food..."

"This is the closest coffee shop to my house... I'm going to miss the skinny vanilla lattes..." Sydney said mournfully.

"Well we still might be able to save it," Magnus said. He stepped through the hole in the window not bothering with the door. Sydney and Adrian hesitantly followed.

The exterior of the restaurant only gave a glimpse of what the interior looked like. Multicolored chairs were strewn all around the room. Paintings with bite marks hung limply on the walls. There were banging sounds coming from a room in the back that Sydney assumed was the kitchen.

Magnus opened the door and grimaced in disgust. "Adrian, follow my lead. Sydney, stay here."

Sydney did not argue with this. She wanted nothing to do with whatever the men were trying to attempt even as curious as she was. She bid them good luck and situated herself on one of the chairs directly in the door's line of sight.
