Dimitri stiffened. He had figured Simon Lewis's transformation was different than that of spirit's, but he didn't expect this. He shook his head and said, "No, that is not something that happens to me."

Simon's face fell. That haunted look Dimitri had noticed returned. "I should have guessed we wouldn't be the same. It was kind of a long shot anyways..."

Dimitri nodded. Then it came to him. He had been trying to figure out why what he said was so familiar. "Rose may be able to help you. She experienced the same thing when she was shadowkissed."

Simon knit his eyebrows together in confusion. "But I can't be shadowkissed can I? That doesn't make any sense!"

"How did you come back, exactly?"

"I don't think you want to know. It wasn't by the Grace of God or whatever that spirit stuff comes from."

Dimitri frowned. "I can handle it." Unlike the other guardians Dimitri wasn't hesitant towards demons. To him they should be treated the same as Strigoi and he was glad that there was an underground society that was dedicated to protect it, arrogant or not.

"One of the Princes of Hell brought me back. He took my memories so my friends could live in pain knowing I was alive, but I wouldn't know them. Obviously they wouldn't settle for that. Magnus gave me the chance to be Nephilim to escape the demon's wrath."

"Then it would make sense you have a connection to the dead, but I would still talk to Rose. She's more knowledgable about this than I."

Simon looked over to where Rose sat talking animatedly to Clary. "But she's not shadowkissed anymore... Is she?"

"No, but she told me she learned to block it out. If you ask her she'll help you-" Dimitri stopped short. Someone had crossed to the table in the corner of his eye. It was Adrian. Dimitri suppressed a sigh. Adrian had been constantly bothering Rose lately. Even though he claimed he wanted nothing to do with her he always found reasons to be around her.

Before he had been changed back into a dhampir, Rose and Adrian had dated. Dimitri never knew how serious it was, but it didn't change the fact he had stolen Rose from Adrian. He had thought he would never love again. Being around Rose when they were on the run had changed that. It had made him the man he once was. And being the man he once was, he regretted his part in Rose cheating on Adrian and let him smother Rose despite her pleas of him talking to Adrian. Rose deserved it and she knew it.

"We can talk about this with Rose later," he said ending the conversation there. Simon shrugged though the haunted look didn't fade.

When he walked over to the table the shadowhunters were giving Adrian wary looks as he talked to Rose. Her face brightened at seeing Dimitri approach.

"You have to help me little dhampir. My father won't let me even write to her," Adrian was saying. Dimitri grimaced. He was drunk. Isabelle scooted closer to Clary as he slumped down next to her. Dimitri wondered if he had noticed the shadowhunters yet.

"I'm sorry, Adrian, but I have no idea..." Rose tried to sound apologetic, but Dimitri knew that she was just trying to mask her irritation. Adrian gave her a mournful look. "Maybe I could dig up some stuff, but if you haven't noticed Dimitri and I have some people to look after at the moment."

Adrian glanced over to the shadowhunters and his eyes widened slightly. "Where'd you find these people? Underground New York?"

Behind Dimitri Simon chuckled and said, "You know he's not wrong..." Alec rolled his eyes.

"They are shadowhunters-"

"And a warlock," Magnus groaned, "Do I even look like a shadowhunter?!"

Adrian frowned, "Are you guys like a cult?"

Jace who had been talking very intently to Clary joined the conversation by saying, "Yes, that's exactly what we are... Who are you?"

Adrian smiled broadly, "Adrian Ivashkov at your service. You guys look a little weathered. How 'bout you all join me for a drink?"

The shadowhunters looked appalled. Magnus looked delighted. Dimitri didn't know how to feel about him.

"Adrian that is not appropriate." Dimitri said sternly. Now this was when he was allowed to intervene. Adrian's face grew cold.

"Shouldn't they have a little fun at Court? Besides no one has explained what shadowtheives are."

"Shadowhunters," Dimitri sighed. Rose and him were due for another shift soon. Maybe them hanging with Adrian wasn't such a bad idea... Dimitri trusted that the shadowhunters (excluding Magnus, Dimitri still wasn't sure about him) could take care of themselves and in this state Adrian was harmless. "Alright Adrian if you think you can be a better host fine with me. Rose and I are supposed to be back in a minute anyways."

Rose gave him a startled look. "Really? Your letting them go with him?!" She exclaimed. Dimitri tried not to smile. Rose had been determined to keep control today and he was glad she had given up. This was the Rose he loved.

Dimitri shrugged, "What harm could he do to trained assassins?"

She groaned and glared at Adrian. "You are lucky we have to leave." And then to the Nephilim, "If you need us just uh ask a guardian, they'll tell you where we are."

And with a few nods Rose and Dimitri left. On the way back to the throne room Rose took his hand and said, "I'm worried about Lissa." She had her gaze fixed ahead, but he could see the worry in her expression.

"When are you not worried about Lissa?" Dimitri had expected her to want to talk about their friends first, but like always she put her best friend first.

"Her plan... Its so unlike her... She's usually not so bold. Do you like it?"

Dimitri considered this. Ever since she was crowned Lissa had been playing the role of peacemaker, settling major issues left and right. She was smarter than the last queen had been and managed to not depend on the Council so much when decisions were made. But their influence was still present and due to recent disturbances Lissa had been forced to make tough decisions. It was hard on her. Rose had told him that she said she .wasn't being the ruler she wanted to be.

"This is natural, Roza. Its not the first chance she has gotten to actually put one of her reforms in motion."

"You didn't answer my question," Rose said turning her face towards him.

"Why does my opinion matter? You forget we are just guardians."

Rose caught the double meaning. "Stop changing the subject, comrade, I know giving into Jace was wrong. I just can't help myself around him! He's an arrogant ass!"

Before she got into her rant any further, Dimitri decided the original topic was actually safer. "I agree with the shadowhunters. Lissa should have considered that..."

Rose stopped in her tracks making him stop too. They were just outside Royal Housing where Lissa had retired after the meeting with the Nephilim. "What?! It's brilliant!"

"You just said it was unlike her," Dimitri said trying not to smile. Protective even if contradictory, when will she ever learn?

"Yes, her attitude. The shadowhunters are being stupid! Who would choose Strigoi over Moroi?!"

Dimitri looked at his watch. Two minutes late. "We can talk about this later. What matters is Lissa and what this making her become."

"Her become what?"

"Something only you get away with being, reckless."
