Spirit was eating Lissa alive. She didn't realize it at first, but all the signs were there: uncontrollable rage, self destruction, obsessive tendencies. She had foolishly hoped that her separation from Rose would calm spirit's darkness, but as was the theory she was twice as vulnerable as before. And, boy, did she feel it.
Managing the ghost door situation had been difficult and confusing. The Shadow world had been hinted throughout many of the history classes Lissa had taken, but now actually interacting with it was a completely different experience. The similarities between the Nephilim and the guardians was astounding and Lissa marveled at the possibilities if the two races were combined. But no one seemed to see that unfortunately.
Rose and Christian had betrayed her. How could they side with the shadowhunters over her? Even loyal Dimitri seemed to sway to their side. After she had whisked Abe Mazur away (something that had been fueled by her hurt feelings alone, she actually didn't mind Rose's father), she suggested to her visitors that they take a small break. She needed to rethink her approach and had retreated to the bathroom to give herself some privacy.
Rose was right about one thing though, this wasn't her. But how could she stop? Without directness nothing could change. Besides anyone who chooses Strigoi over Moroi was an enemy of her people and should be treated as such. She hated to do it but it was a must.
The door of the bathroom opened. She had been sitting in one of the chairs of the powder room adjacent to the stalls. Normally guardians didn't follow her to the bathroom at Court. They had no reason to seeing that Court was one of the most heavily guarded compounds in the world for Moroi.
Unsurprisingly it was Rose. Her best friend always had to have the last word and that was apparent in her eyes. If things had been weird between them before the shadowhunters came, they were definitely weird now.
"Lissa we need to talk!" she said hands on her hips.
"Queen Vasilisa, to you," Lissa said maintaining that steely tone. It saddened her to play the queen card, but it was the only way Rose could feel her pain.
Rose ignored her correction, "I think you need to get back on your meds before you do something to the Nephilim you'll regret!"
"How dare you blame spirit for this! I do admit that it has caught up to me, but the Nephilim and that warlock are being ridiculous. I have to make them see the mistake they are making."
"I understand that, Liss, but you're doing it in the wrong way! You think that forcing them is what you want, but it's spirit that wants to take it that far."
"I. HAVE. IT. UNDER. CONTROL." Lissa shouted. Rose flinched, but kept her ground.
Before Rose could go at it again Lissa stood up and went out of the bathroom. She was too afraid that Rose would change her mind.
In the hallway the Queen's guard immediately swarmed around Lissa, blocking off Rose's access to her. As Lissa and her posse retreated back to the palace room Lissa could hear Rose in the distance, "Fine, Lissa, you're on your own. I'm done trying to save you. I'm not going to wait around for you to get sent to a mental ward."
