Jace didn't believe in God, but he kind of wished he did getting involved with Abe Mazur. He didn't usually strike deals with potential Moroi mobsters, but what he offered was something he couldn't pass up.
"You could do that?" Jace asked incredulously. "You're not even royal! How can a Moroi weld that much power?!"
Clary and Jace had come across Abe while on their way to guest housing. It had been weeks since they had spent a night together and Jace wanted to make sure that this opportunity was well spent. He didn't want to admit it, but the other reason was that he had been on his feet all day and well he wasn't a vampire. It was 6 o'clock in the morning and Jace was tired.
Abe had come out of the shadows when they were fixing to open the guest housing door. A few sly remarks and a bargain later, Jace was starting to not feel so kindly towards him.
Abe smiled and said, "Its not as impossible as you think, shadowhunter. And the type of influence I have over Queen Vasilisa does not fall in the category you are thinking of."
Clary shook her head, "What does that even mean?"
"It means I can get you out of this plan with Vasilisa."
"Yes, you've said that already," Jace groaned, "but why would that help you? Nephilim trade secrets doesn't seem like something of interest to you. Besides our secrets are more valuable than anything you could offer!"
"Oh but you underestimate the young queen. She wants this one badly and her winning streak has made her cocky. She won't let this go."
Jace laughed, "Even if we agreed to her plan what difference will it make? We may be ambassadors, but the Clave still reveres us as children. The most they'll do is revise the Accords and enforce the same laws on you guys the ones the other vampires abide by. What Lissa doesn't realize is that the Clave doesn't do partnership."
Abe's smile faltered, "That's why she's so set on your help. You may be children, but you know what they are like. She's hoping you guys can come up with a work around. Rose tells me you are very good at that kind of thing."
"Well then I'm glad we can't help her," Clary sighed, "her faith in us is a little unsettling..."
"My help is looking more and more favorable is it?" Abe said turning serious, "Look I can give a choice, you can tell me a few things about your society or you can keep your precious info and owe me a favor."
Jace looked at Clary and wished he could read her mind. Abe seemed as sketchy as a crack dealer on the side of the road. Was the quieting of Lissa's plan worth trusting him? Her plan wasn't horrible, but it would cause a disturbance with the other vampires that would make the problems with the fae look tolerable. The Clave was too weak to handle that.
The thing that bothered Jace the most was Abe actually convincing the queen. If she was so dead set as he claimed then why would he make a difference?
"Open end," Jace said finally. He looked at Clary again to find her face streaked with worry.
Abe's smile returned. He was about to shake Jace's hand when there was a sound like a gunshot in the distance. He frowned and continued to shake Jace's hand.
"What was that?" Clary asked.
Abe shrugged. "Guardians don't usually use guns, but the situation does arise." He gave them one last grin and walked towards the direction of the gunshot despite his nonchalance.
"I don't trust him," Clary said quietly.
"Me neither, but scarily enough he is our only option..."
